These are fabulous! Hmmm, I wonder if my Mother would wear one when she is doing yard work?! Maybe, as she still wears fancy dress hats and fascinators to church! I may have to copy your design...if you don't mind! You did a wonderful thing for someone else!
My grandma never went outside without a sunbonnet & the only time ever saw her without an apron on was when dressed for church. (She carried her plug of tobacco in her apron pocket tied in a hanky!) She also carried a pocket knife to cut a TINY piece of tobacco off her plug. Now guess where I'm from...yep, East TN. I don't wear aprons all the time, or sunbonnets, OR chew tobacco...but I do appreciate our culture.
These are beautiful... and you are a wonderful person to make one for your neighbor!
Thank you--she is elderly but still drives (a pickup truck) and asks my hubby to help load and unload her lawnmower when she has it repaired. Yep, she pushes a mower, still!
So pretty....all of them...Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for commenting. I think I am wound up amd will make some more. I had been presenting the apron one to new neighbors that moved nearby. Helps get acquainted with newbies.
She is very lucky to have you help make her happy. I believe in what comes around goes around. :)
I commend you for doing this for the lady. Brought back memories. A family that lived near my grand mother when I was a child some 70 + yrs ago had their 80+ grandma living with them and you never saw her out without her Prairie bonnet on. I can see her now out sweeping the yard with her sage broom, bonnet and long bloomers that peeped out from under her long skirts.. I had never seen anything like her except in movies and being 6&7 yes old she fascinated me. Didn't know what senility was in those days, but as my grandmother use to say"families took care of their own" in that day.
How kind you are, to have made these for your neighbor. Bonnets are an underutilized part of clothing these days; just ask anyone who is being treated for skin cancer! I'm "allergic" to the sun; I cannot be out in it without breaking out in hives, so I have to wear long sleeves, long pants, and usually one of those large scarves from India to keep the sun out. I think a bonnet would be a very fun change. I LOVE your reproductions!! I'm inspired to give it a shot. :)
Thanks..they are actually very simple. The pink one has 3 pieces and 8 buttons/buttonholes, but easy for laundering.
Really beautiful bonnets. I do love the idea of air coming in.
I remember when living with my grandmother she would not let us go out without putting our bonnet on. She made it out of feed sacks stiffened with corn flake box strips. Thanks for the memory
Absolutely lovely! I'm with you I'll bet these would really sell at the festival and be a keepsake of the great time had by all. I know I'd wear one like this.
Come by my house and pick up for selling...we'll split the fortune. It is so hot in July, I'll just stay home & listen to the fiddlin' on tv.
They are just gorgeous, well done and I know she will appreciate the bonnet. Love Chris
My Aunt would have loved one of these. They had a market garden and spent hours in the hot sun. I was always on the look out for hats with a flap at the back for her. She would have been like your neighbour showed it to everyone. She got a real thrill out of someone doing something for her.
These are beautiful! I would love to find a pattern for anyof these.
I looked--it appears to be a copy of an old one--notice how yellowed it looks? I never knew where my mom got the pattern..no pocket included. My overlay was an old tablecloth. Thx
Try the costumn section of the pattern books. I think I may have seen them there.
How cleaver you are! Reminded my of my daughter and her best friend who played Little House on the Prairie the whole time they were in elementary school. They wore sunbonnets like these (but I didn't make them) and long skirts that I did make. Thanks for showing us.
What fun--I loved that tv series, and Michael Landon. I think I had a crush on him.
very very lovely God bless you for being kind to those in need hugs
We all ''pay it forward, I'm sure. Many people have been kind to me. But I should make some up to sell..The annual 4th of July "The Smithville TN Old Time Fiddler's Jamboree" in nearby town, brings visitors from across the big waters. They suffer the hot sun for 2-3 days for chance to be fiddler champion. Bet lots of the ladies would wish for a head cover then! I'm too smart to suffer that heat, so I stay home and watch it on public TV.
Beautiful job...I bet she is thrilled!
She was really grateful to have a new one. She said she had searched for one just like hers...unsuccessfully.
Your bonnets are lovely. I can see why the widow lady loves hers and wanted to show it to everyone. How clever that the bonnet opens up into an apron. Someone was really using their head on that one!!!!
I absolutely love them and your friend is very lucky to have you as a friend.
Makes me think of Way Back!!!!Stunning..Great and fantastic work done
these are great. I want a bonnet to wear while I sleep. My hair is unruly and hot. These are more than I could have hoped for and great inspiration. Who knew women could multitask and go from garden to kitchen with the turn of an apron.
I make satin pillowcases for sleeping on--it helps keep your hairdo better than cotton or poly. And I make my pj's of sating to make it easier to roll over in bed..it is easier with my back ehich can be painful sometimes.
