Yes for me too a zipper for the main section is a must!
I used the base pattern from Debbie shore's tutorial. ...but used a smaller size and added zippers and pockets by myself :)

I followed partially one of those for this bag!

The whole bag looks great - the decorative stitch looks good. I think sometimes we expect it to look one way and when it doesn't we are are not happy. :)
