Saw this on utube so i had to try it.My friend at camped showed me hers so of course i had to try it .Maybe you will to???https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x...

It only takes a wee bit of fabric from a fat quarter and you can use up those scrapes i am****The spring in them or what holds them shut is a tape measure cut into pieces.Ask hubby he likely has one ??If not the dollar store has some for a buck. They squared the corner but i left mine plain .Thanks for LOOKING hugs Carolyn
If this url don't work type in Snap Purse Tutorial ok

Did you break open the tape measure? Was telling DH about this idea and he said if I cut the end off it will go all the way back in as it is retractable. Just curious as I thought if you wanted to make something a little wider it would be a shame to cut it all the same length at once.

I bought a 16 foot tape.if I cut it at the beginning it will retract but it will also go to far inside and I don't think I would be able to pull it out again. I don't know what to do about cutting the tape. Suzanna

If you want to keep the cut tape measure from retracting, you can put a clothes pin on it...or a couple of pieces of tape over the cut end will keep it from sneaking back inside...

noah by noah 16 Jun 2015

i opened it and cut the whole thing because once you start it unwinds be careful of the Sharpe edges hugs

thank you so much for posting this. I watch the video and went immediately to the toolbox to find the tape. several tapes in there but I decided to head to the hardware store. I bought one for $6. now I just need to figure out how to take the darn thing apart! I am thinking about taping to pieces of the tape together and that may make it stronger. I'm going to try it this weekend. thank you, Suzanna

A few years back I made a clutch purse using the tape measure for the closure and that bag was lined with no exposed seams. If you don't cut off the corners or better yet tape them the sharp edges will cut through the fabric. We don't want anyone getting scratched.

Tape measures of a heavier gauge than the dollar store variety work better.

They are nice and come in handy for many things when you play with the dimensions.
I'd love to see an easy tutorial for one with hidden seams - without too much hand sewing.

These flex open bags and cases are great...I have been doing mine in-the-hoop and they are fun to do...just make sure that you cover the cut ends with a heavy tape to prevent the cut edge of the measuring tape from cutting your finger or through the fabric casing...I have been getting the tape measures at the dollar store...one will make a heap of these!

Very clever. I love it when old things can be re-purposed, or you can find common stuff (and inexpensive) to do the job of costly hardware. I suppose that makes me cheap, lol.
