Great job, I made a wheel cover and embroidered it, I have a large hoop and it worked out great! but I only had one to do, you have a big job in front of you good luck!
Lovely color, have you got any camping designs? They might be cute on here. I've made seat back covers for our motorcycle when we rode. I made a hat bill for his gps...no embroidery. Vinyl can be challenging to work with and you appear to have mastered it. I would embroider on it before stitching together.
Nice cover and I look forward to seeing what you put on them.
i did that two but put elastic on mine like the cover on our tables, also emb. a design then sew it on with a zig zag hugs carolyn
I am amazed at your ability. I get how you made these, 2 pieces. Where did you put the velco and what does it attach to? I guess I would embroider before attaching the front cover to the wheel straight piece. The idea of sticky WSS sounds great. If your design is in center, I wouldn't worry about stitch holes because that part is over the metal rim. My DH said the purpose is to keep the sun off the rubber tires. But I would not stick any pins in them. He also loves these and yes, wants a set. Thank you for sharing.
lol sorry for making more work for you. I attached the Velcro on either side 3 inches from the bottom on each side. It has to grab together underneath the rod @ the back of the trailer. Sorry I have no idea what it is called lol. Pins would leave marks so no pins lol. As I mentioned this was my practice to see if I could do it & the next one will be embroidered I hope lol. thank you very much & I look forward to seeing yours . ~hugs~
I've never felt the weight of Marine vinyl but looks cumbersome to me. Great job, by the way. The only time I've ever seen a tire wheel cover is on a spare tire mounted on a trailer with a deer, a hunter's scene or family name. If ever and probably never I tried this, I would have to mark my design area first with a printed template and embroidery before cutting out the pattern/fabric. You have some very nice suggestions though by others. Your right about pin holes so I'd probably go with the sticky stabilizer also and hold on wherever I could.
lol It should be ok I think we embroider on the key fobs so I figure I won't know if I don't try lol. I like your design ideas I have the perfect design picked out too lol great minds lol. thank you very much . ~hugs~
Your covers look great. Can I give you another suggestion? After I made my covers my husband wanted me to put a design on them. So I went and got pieces of different colors of vinyl and made an applique of what he wanted a bass fish and a deer head. Then I sewed them on the covers.
a good suggestion but seems like extra work sigh......thank you very much . ~hugs~
Well done!!!! Sticky back wss and take your time. Is there no way to open a seam . Are the others the same size? If so then leave this for one that is not going to show. You can float this piece on top of the sticky back wss before it is sewn. Can't wait to see the finished product.
oh that is a good idea I never thought of the sticky back! Cuties are the best! ~thanks & hugs~
You are brave to tackle such a big job. The cover looks great. I'm sure everyone that sees these will want you to make some for them so be careful and not make them too pretty! How big is your largest hoop? Looks like you've gotten lots of good suggestions. I'd try the patch myself or try doing the embroidery before sewing the sides on. Hope you post the results.
It looks great, a lot of work for sure. Guess I'm a bit lazy, as on my machine I'd have to stand there and manually support some of the weight the whole time it embroidered. (Terrified I'd mess it up.) So... I'd use some extra vinyl and make a patch and embroider the desired design on the patch, then sew or glue it on the wheel cover. If you used the same vinyl it wouldn't look like a patch, just a framed design. I hope this makes sense... :)
Wow Loralye! Nice job on a big project. I have the same advice as others.... float vs hoop, sticky stabilizer, use tape for marking, and hold the weight of the excess while you embroider. I would also suggest that you find a light stitch count design to avoid cutting the vinyl with a lot of needle pokes.
I have the perfect design already & it is a ripple stitch so not dense @ all. Some good ideas here & I will give it some thought & go slowly so as to ensure a good outcome. Thanks Sharon ~hugs~
WOW..wonderful job..
When I am concerned about placement I usually mark the fabric with pins(with your fabric you will probably want to use painter tape or something like that) outlining where it will be cut (however DO NOT cut, not shouting) then emb where I want the design.. If it is a little off I replace my pattern piece and cut it out. This also allows you to compensate for fabric shrinkage after embroidery. Hope that makes some sense.
how do I hoop it, this is a large piece of Marine Vinyl I could roll the right side but how do I prevent it from slipping out of the hoop? Where do I put the tape? I guess I could use bicycle clamps to hold the sides but still how do I keep the stuff from slipping or moving while the design stitches out?
Use sticky back stabilizer to hold in place and then the bicycle clamps will add extra insurance to hold it. The tape is used as a guide just to show you where you will eventually cut the fabric. If you have a lot of extra fabric on the side it will have to be supported to stop the drag.. I usually try to place a smooth surface to put extra fabric on and make sure it had an amount that will allow for the moving of the hoop.. I have even stood by the machine holding the fabric ( I know a pain but worth it when result is what you want it to be.
It looks fabulous Loralye and kudos to you for making it. I hope you can work out what sort of design to put on it. Your husband is very lucky you can make it for him. I'd just measure the width of the cover and halve it from top to bottom and left to right and then place the design where the centre point criss-crosses! Love Chris
but what do I do with the excess on the right side of the hoop? Should I float the vinyl or hoop it? It is big so a bit heavy too how do I prevent it from moving around in the hoop? If I pin it I will leave holes?
