O.k. cuties,

As I work on my plan for my new sewing room, thought I would ask you all to give me hints or suggestion from all your expériences. What is there that you cannot do without, what would you love to have and what is the most useful, practical item in your sewing room. My new sewing room will measure 16' x 20' so I will be in heaven. My ''Happy'' machine will have a prime placement where I can easily work around it to change my thread colors. I plan on a sewing island 4' x 8' with lots of storage Inside to hold all my rolls of stabilizers etc and my fabric storage wall will measure 12' long and go from floor to ceilingwith an additional 12' x 4' space. I am debating on lighting, spots or flourescent? I will have a 4' x 30'' sewing table, another the same size for my serger and one as well for my computer.

Can't wait to hear from you on this, I want it to be perfect, I have waited a long time for this.

hugs to all
Michelle

Hello,

Everything everyone has said I agree with. I'd love to have a work-board above my machine which is within reach. I have all my threads in plastic boxes away inside a cupboard. Scissor holders within reach and my ironing board in permanent position! Good luck with it all Michelle and I hope your surgery goes well and your recuperation is minimal. Love Chris

I have a good size sewing area..Just wish I had someone to clean and organize it better for me. My top wish is better lighting. Then a couple more machines.

thanks to all for your imput and suggestions. I will consider them all, my plan is pretty much made up and I hope that my sewing room will be up an operational end of Sept, mid Oct. Hopefully hubby can get this done during my down time for my upcoming surgery. I should be laid up six weeks. I hope he will be more productive than I will.
I will keep you all posted and take pictures.

hugs to all
Michelle

Sounds to me like you have a good foundation and now the next layer is notions and lighting area or general vs. task, I think of it as workstations. Ironing, cutting and placing, machine stations, etc. I also would like a mobile thread organizer.

I have carpet on my sewing room and love it as if you drop fabric on the floor there is no dust to spoil it. It is industrial type low pile easy to clean. I have a broom that you use on carpet to sweep up dog hair ( have no dog) a quick once over with this catches all the threads and then I vac.
Also wouldn't be without my ironing board permanently set up. Have fun designing your room.

Wow, congratulations on such a nice sized space. I too, would want fabric storage that can stand like the stores. I tried the spot light type lights and then had them changed due to shadows and not enough light when I rearranged. I now use Ott bulbs in a ceiling fan light and have stand up and desk top lights that I can move around as needed. I love the carpet in my sewing room (upstairs bonus room). Have fun designing your new room and post some pics to show us when finished.

Such fun for you to dream up! My list for me is: No carpets; Built in shelves for fabric storage, like in stores. A wall of white pegboard with hangers; use to display a fabric, design etc. Built in cabinets, with drawers for storage. Cushy flooring for when standing or cutting around the center island. What ever you choose and do will make it yours. I would use the otto lights and have them recessed in the ceiling, around the outer walls and over the island machine 'happy'. No shadow areas this way.

Graceandham has a lot of wonderful ideas. I found I could fit more fabric in and it is easier to access by lining it along the shelves like the stores display it than by putting it in piles. I use baskets and bins for small pieces of fabric, stabilizers and test stitch outs. I love the hanging pockets for things like hoops. I also made tags to identify what type of stabilizer each roll happens to be. Velcro is great as a closure because it is easier than elastic. Have fun and can't wait to see your new studio.

First, cushiony floor padding where you will stand at the Happy, if you will stand. Then, my dream is to have my computer at right angle to my sewing machine so I can easily turn and alternate between sewing and computer work and also link my designs from computer to embroidery machine. Threads away from sunlight or shielded from it. (I keep my cones in plastic closet drawers on wheels, near the machine (left and right), but with cardboards on the sunny side of the drawer.) Ott light for color checking (the "true sunlight" bulbs). Adjustable chair with arms, lumbar support and a low stool beneath so you can adjust your sitting postures. Music? More thoughts after working in my room today - space for hanging clothing, and space for "before" and "after" finishing design. Ironing board. Water/sink? Storage for notebooks, clipboard or however you store your printed out design info. Space for cat(s) if applicable. Enjoy.

I love my cupboards with transparent boxes, so I can see everything through it (OK I labelled everything as well) and I love not having a carpet, so much easier to clean. What I would do next time is putting in better lighting!

Sewing in one little corner of the den and embroidering in a small 4 x 4 area I couldn't even begin to know where to start as to what I would like best except for space and that you will have ./Lilian

That's me. I have one corner in the guest bedroom. Try my best to straighten up before company comes! I have to put my embroidery machine ON TOP of my sewing machine. Can't do both at the same time.

I am much the same. I have to put my embroidery machine away every time I use it - such a pain

Hi Michelle, OH to have the option of planning a sew/craft room..... but DEFINITELY I would have a thread holder BUT with space for the matching bobbin!! Also living in an area with loads of dust I would want some way to cover the entire holder, it would save on light exposure and cleaning the spools!!! Have a blast and Enjoy!!
