Just to show that a dodgy piece of patchwork is not really enhanced by making it into something!

I tried the patchwork method posted by eggyannie a while ago. (What has happened to her? She hasn't posted for months.) It was not totally successful. (I used iron on interlining so it is all very stiff.) I decided to make it into a zipped purse. As you can see I found it impossible to match the squares above and below the zip and keep the edges straight!

Excellent work of a very hard design to be perfect with...one would almost need to insert the zipper and then cut the fabric to make it straight on both sides.

I feel your pain! It is one reason I prefer to use different size rectangles/squares so in the end the top will not match the bottom by design. Although, it is still ordered... It helps me sleep at night. LOL

Hi spendlove, I think your scrappy squares are fine, Your purse is fine, it just needs some built-in machine stitching placed on the seam lines to dress it up. If you use an embroidery thread in Gold or Dusty pink, I think you may be surprised with the look.
Thankyou for sharing

I think you're being way too fastidious with your own work, Sue. I bet you'd be way more tolerant if it was someone else's :) Looks great to me! I love all of those colours that jump out all over the place.

I wonder if you had put lace on the zip it wouldn't show so much that it doesn't line up.
Even so still looks good to me.

It's still a very pretty purse.
I wondered about eggyannie as well, thought that she might have phoned or mailed you or asterixsews. Hope all is well and she is camping somewhere in that little van of hers.

You are too hard on yourself, I think it is just fine. Maybe the next time you could make the top part a solid to match the zipper if you think the squares don't line up.

Totally agree you're being too critical of your own work. Lol. Scrappy is lovely and helps us remember the smallest pieces together can create something beautiful. People and quilting and many more topics fit this saying--together we can help each other shine

Your squares are nicely put together. Perhaps it is the colors that just don't appeal to you. Looks very nice.

You are right - I just used random tiny scraps and I prefer something a little more ordered!

mops by mops 16 Sep 2015

I do not like random either. I once tried the A Mile a Minute method. you were supposed to select strips more or less blindfolded and use your ugly fabrics as well - and it shows! Not my cup of tea.

This is a cute zippy bag. The interfacing behind it (creating stiffness) is a good thing for this application. I had tried this method a bit ago and quickly learned that I didn't have the patience to do this!

Well done Sue.... Perfect is in the eye of the beholder... I think it's perfect. --Sharon

The interfacing is quite helpful, as you say, but I prefer to use curtain interlining between the layers. It is soft but firm.
