Our embroidery machines have made us all very lazy - or certainly me. My next door neighbour teaches lace making. When I see all those threads I immediately get a headache!!
Our Group are doing a Lace table Cloth. I gave up on the first side. Actually I have see a finished product and it is beautiful. My problem is that I have no one to pass it onto who would appreciate the time and effort put into it.
Wow ! you girls are out of my league! I wanted to be a fashion designer and in college I was told I did not have the art talent to put it on paper. oh! Well
I only want to Tat because Mother could and she never taught me. I was taught to Crochet and Knit when I was about 6.
If at first you don't succeed then try, try again../Lillian
If you can not do tatting try needle tatting . IT is a bit easier than regular tatting. I do needle tatting and it is simple. Look on line to see how it is done. Rusti Kate has good videos how to do it. Good luck!! Suzanne
Suzanne, Thank You for this. When I have finished what I need to do on my machine I will give needle tatting a try.
Tatting is easy once you get the hang of turning the knot so that you can close your rings, not so easy when first start. There are only two knots to learn, so it really does not take much time to master the technicalities. Getting the decorative loops all the same length is like getting the tension right in knitting or cross stitch - practice makes perfect.
But using thin threads it takes time to make even a small coaster or doily. I made quite a few when silver sugar-and-cream sets were in fashion, and nice tea and coffecups and saucers.
My iPad drives me nuts - it auto-corrects my spelling in German and gives me a Norwegian keyboard. Due to my location? i haven't a clue!
Sorry no comment on the tatting, but had to laugh because it took me 45 minutes to send a one sentence text in German because of the auto correct, Now I have both language on my phone which creates another set of confusion. I have send the craziest texts because of hitting the send button before checking what language I was in. Ha, ha.
Have a long way to go before I ever make anything that be of any use. To answer both of you re iPad. We were born to early and I don't have any grand children to show me.
Tatting is fun but very slow even more slow then crochet ,Yes these machines do spoil us for sure hugs
Yes I would agree and the even though I probably could do, why would I want to. I am spoiled with the machines!
This Cross stitch I am doing is taking me too long and my machine work is suffering. Hope it doesn't become another UFO.
Tatting is on my bucket list. My great grandmother tried to teach me but she passed when I was 10 years old. Now being in my late 60's I will try to check out you tube.
Pity you didn't learn when you were 10. My Mother used to Tat but never taught me.
I've always wanted to tat. It's nothing but macrame knots. And I'm very good at that. But never could get the hang of tat. Have a friend who is no where as good as I am with other needle work and she's outstanding at tating. Hair pin lace is another one I can't conquer. Just not meant to be. Good luck
When I learned to tat, the teacher gave us quite thick string to use for the very basic stitches. I got into an awful mess just could not get my head around the movement of the bobbin. Anyway I just was NOT going to be beaten by some thread and a bobbin - then I got the Eureka moment and I was off and running. My daughter then gave me a DVD that I could follow - that also helped as I could keep rerunning it - likewise you-tube. I haven't done any in a while now so it could be 'back to the drawing board'. Hope you get to grips with tatting, I find it a very relaxing pastime.
Thanks for this. I said to my teacher that I wonder how I would go with something thicker just to learn the basics. Have a friend who didn't know how to tie a reef knot. When we used something thicker and she could see how the threads sat in the knot and she suddenly saw it.
Good on you for trying, I'm sure it will all click one day and you'll wonder why you didn't try earlier..
Good on you Lyn, what a great art to do. I love watching the ladies do this at craft fairs. I'm afraid it's not for me, but I do hope it doesn't die out. Love Chris
Maybe your hair is white enough now - I always thought tatting was an old lady's art! So glad it did not die out after all and has experienced this revival.
Yes part of my hair is white - (Salt and Pepper) but don't think I will do too much to help Tatting along..
I too learned this art...however I made a girlfriend a trim for her towels and forgot to take a picture of it. Not sure I remember how to do it. I've also tried the bobbin lace and I get myself tangled in knots with that too. Think I need quiet time and no interruptions to accomplish both. :) Glad I'm no the only one who has trouble with these items. hugs
Think in my case it was also too much talking going on for me to concentrate.
Yes Needle tatting is much easier. I tried the regular way and was zooming along until I made a wrong move and the knot I unintentionally created kept me from continuing. I much rather use the imitation the embroidery machine can create.
