Mugrugs -- Update

I am a cup and saucer person and never made mugrugs before. But the beautiful autumn colours were quite inspiring.
I made the one on the left first. I digitised the design that fits the 5x7 hoop and I made a miniquilt with it. Drawback: I had to do the border on the sewing machine and my corners still need to be hand stitched.

For the second one I made an ITH design, resized the design a bit so it fitted the 5x7 hoop . It only needs a small opening to be hand sewn.
Drawback: the lining is not quilted and the mugrug is smaller than the first one.

After reading your comments I went for the ITH one and made a number of variations, see picture 2

The one on the left is the one I showed before with the strips (method#1), design #1, 4700 stitches.
The middle one is design #2, done as a (reverse) applique (method #2). 8400 stitches - due to the satin stitch.
The one on the right is design #1 with a fancy (reverse) applique (method #3). Also around 8400 stitches.

You can lay your contrast fabric on top and do them as an appliqué, or when your background shines through (as in my case) as a reverse appliqué.

The set is now available at Yoriko's site.

Wow, choices! If I could only choose one it would be Picture 2, middle version. We are enjoying your designing!

Love these! The pumpkin quilting design is perfect to use in a bigger quilt as well.

I made design#2, with the most pumpkins, in a much larger version too - and I made designs that fit my 150 x150 and my 200x200 hoop which would be nice for a quilt.

Love them both the big one has more pumpkin patch more vine work and some extra over all work but looks fantastic, The ITH one looks great and fast to put together. So with them or your third one to come. I know they all are great and one thing most of us all are good at. Depends on the mood when you go to put it together. Today I would be ITH #2.

Like them both. Anything that can be done ITH the better! Less hand stitching, the better.

I love ith items for the 5x7 hoop as it doesn't seem to take as long. Either way, they are both lovely. Love Crhis

I like the bigger the better. You could also satin stitch the edge. But, I prefer the hand stitch edge. It is quite lovely.

I love them both but I think the larger one wins out since it really showcases that nice pumpkin stitching!

I'm not sure what the finished size is, but if they both fit into the 5x7 hoop they can't be too big. Size in mug rugs tend to be personal preference. I've done 6x8, and I think that's too big. But the 5x7 finished size is the one I find most people prefer. Having the back quilted doesn't seem to matter to people either. I like the bigger one in the photo because it looked like a pumpkin patch to me. Of course, the color is fantastic too! Well done!

The smaller one almost fills the 5x7 hoop.
The design stitched for the larger has the same size, the binding is extra.
I have resized the design #1 for 5x7 ITH item and I also did them as a reversed applique, with straight edges and a fantasy shape that fits the pumpkins. I want to make all variations tomorrow and see what what looks best - and which one will be the easiest to stitch.

I prefer the larger as well after all it is meant to hold a cuppa & a treat not sure the smaller one would. Another option might be reverse applique style with the orange fabric being fancy stitched on the background & then you could easily add the backing fabric rst after creating the pumpkin quilting. Just a thought. They are both cute~hugs~

Thank you. That was exactly what I meant by the third option.

I like the one for 5 x 7 - with nothing but the small opening to hand sew - because I like them to go quickly. But you did a great job on both :)

I like the second mug-rug but larger, like the one at the left. Love the projects made in one hooping without hand stitching when possible and I use wss Vilene for every project.

Thank you. I like the larger size as well, but I wanted to restrict myself to a 5x7 (130x180) hoop.

Your pumpkins are great looking. My vote: I like the second version with a small amount of hand-sewing and fewer hoopings (less time, preparation and less stabilizer) to get to the final ITH product. I think decorative stitching on the back would rarely be seen and the size of mugrugs doesn't require the stability of stitching through many layers.

Thank you, good to have you opinion. I'll stitch one of the third option and see if I like it (in the one hooping variety).
