I printed your recipe out on Tuesday and immediately checked my spices. I had everything except the Old Hickory Smoked Salt. Yesterday , I was in Kroger's grocery store and and stood in front of the Spice Islands section and looked and looked. The herbs and spices are arranged alphabetically, but not the salts and peppers. So, stepped over the the next brand, then the next, etc. Finally found McCormick Smoked Sea Salt and thought this was close enough. I will wait until am ready to make it to purchase all the cereals and pretzels. I can't wait to try this as I have never made this with the herbs. Kay
I am sure the Smoked Sea Salt will be fine. Do you live in the States. My daughter finds Spice Island Spices in Safeway in the US...
I add corn nuts and gold fish and anything else you like.
Jerri, where in Canada are you? I live in Oliver, BC and recently bought marjoram and tarragon! Maybe it was old stock and they were trying to get rid of it. I'll check again. This is one of our Christmas traditions and I never minded how much the kids ate because it was basically cereal.
I live in Port Coquitlam, BC. Marjoram and Tarragon are common spices. The recipe doesn't call for Tarragon. My daughter lives in the States, so she keeps her eyes open for the Spice Islands spices...Beau Monde, Summer Savory and Hickory Smoke Salt are the hard spices to find and I think Spice Island are the only ones that make it.
One of the things i love ,i never made it last year as i ate to much of it lol
Thanks Jerri hugs
Right the link works very well and oh what a surprise. I was expecting something chocolate based. The finished quantity seems quite an amount. Please what is Beau Monde? This is what I love about Cute the different snippets of information from around the world. Thanks for the recipe.
I am glad the link worked and your welcome. It is a very tasty recipe.
It does make a large amount, but believe me you won't be sorry if you make this recipe. I used to double or triple it. I would put everything in a large Rubbermaid tote to mix it. I took bags in to work for staff members. Its one of the things they miss about me, since I am retired.
Beau Monde is a Spice made by Spice Islands. I have never seen it anywhere else.
I have a "Beau Monde" Private Selection Kroger brand. Ingredients: Salt, Dextrose, Dehydrated Onion and Celery seed. Does this help?
I do have some Beau Monde, thank you for the info, maybe it will help others if they are wanting to try the recipe.
We call it Trash in the South (Southern USA). My former boss' wife made me some every Christmas dipped in confectioners' sugar and called it "White Trash."
No No ! white trash is different. It has M&M's and melted white chocolate. My neighbor made me some. Kay
Yes, we always made this, also. The recipe used to come on the Chex cereal boxes. I think they used Worcestershire sauce as an ingredient. Kay
I haven't added Worchestershire sauce to mine, but bet it would be good as well. My family like the Spice Island recipe, so I don't change it other than added more goodies.
thank you for reminding us of this great Nibble recipe.
This is exactly the right place! Thank you for posting this. I always make it but have never seen this version. I look forward to trying your Spice Island Version if I can find them.
Your welcome Jerrilyn and glad I picked the right spot. I always find Spice Islands at Safeway, then you don't pay shipping charges. This is the best recipe ever...if you like it a little spicer just add a little more Cayanne...
perfect for the holidays Jerri thanks
Your welcome Loralye. I only make them at Christmas, its just a special treat. It is costly with the price of Spices. Some are just regular spices so I buy those in Bulk, but the special ones are Spice Islands brand. Safeway in the States seem to be the one place to buy them.
