Daughter from Ky and her daughter came this past weekend. She brought me this and said a Dr. who knew she did emb. brought and gave her this saying his wife didn't want it anymore. She obviously did not want it because thread was what I call spooling or falling off spool as she tried to use it. Question didn't someone at sometime tell us we could make our own netting for these spools to prevent this and did she tell us how . As in one of the pics I took you can tell by the close up why the lady did not want them, she evidently did not know what to do. I know I need nets, have never had any spools this large, most are Madeira and some RA. Needless to say I'm glad to get them. Lillian

I make tubes with stretch knit fabric and it works very well.

Lillian, I know you inquired about netting - but this is what I use to keep my thread from unraveling. Just dollar store little girls hair ties. They work great for large or small spools. Just a thought!

Check locally with your florist, too. The nets they put over premium rose buds to keep them from opening "prematurely" are just right for some threads, and the florist is probably buying them by the 1,000.

Oh, and what a blessing!

lbrow by lbrow edited 13 Nov 2015

I do not know any florists personally but daughter knows several since she does all the flower buying around. I'm going to get her to see if she can find some for me. Yes it was a blessing. This particular daughter is who got me hooked on machine embroidery years ago. She has very little time for it anymore and no space since she is sharing an apt. with her oldest daughter She has always been a help to me though when I would call and cry help what do I do next? LO . My girls have always helped me out with essentials needed for what I love to do. All 4 of them/Lillian

Lucky...should be fairly easy to get down to the good stuff...here's a link for the netting material to make them...seems very reasonably priced, too...

Looks as though the lady that had these threads did not look after them, shame,I would remove all the tangles down to good thread and store them up right, nets in Australia are about 70cents and about 19cm long and can be cut to the size you need. PM me and i will gladly send you the details.Lillian not sure where you live but i know of another place as well. Sandra.

Sandra, I live in Alabama of the USA. My daughter said the lady's hubby had just purchased the machine for her several months ago and she had quickly gotten bored with it because she had no one to teach her how to use it... Thanks for your offer. I think I'll be trying several of these suggestions to see what will work the best for me.

Good luck, i am sure you will find something to work for you.Yo will certainly put the threads to good use, this was a terrific gift for you. Sandra.

Looks to me like the lady just used to throw them in a box or drawer. I would unwind all the birds nests until you get to the smooth part. I have used the cling tape and the nets but also have just put them away forgetting to put it on. I keep mine standing up and never have a problem.

I've never had a problem like this but I have not had these large spools either so wasn't really sure how to fix the problem. Thanks/Lillian

That's what I was looking for. Needed to know what they were made from. Didn't even know there was a stretch net. Next time I get anywhere a place that sells it will get some. Thanks for answering so soon, rescuer. once again rescuer to the rescue/Lillian

You could try the Glad wrap brand press and seal, cut strips wide enough to wrap around the spool. When you are ready to use the thread take off the Glad wrap and switch to one of the nets, that way you don't need many nets.
Also, I have heard that the elastic gauze that they wrap around your arm after a blood draw keeps slippery thread on the spool.
Great hand me down!!!Enjoy.

Thank you/ Nurse gave me some of that elastic gauze just yesterday after Ron's IV and C.T. was over. I'll have to try all of these to see what works best for me Hugs Lillian

You can buy what's called "thread nets" just about anywhere. They are used when you are actually using thread to stitch and keeps it from unwinding too fast or pooling around the bottom of the thread spool

In this case, I'd simply cut away the "spooling" until you get to where it is smooth again. It simply isn't worth the hassle to try to unwind/rewind the thread. Then, wrap that static cling tape...I can't remember what it's name is, sigh...to wrap around the thread so that it won't get spoolies in the future. The tape is clear plastic and clings to itself. You can cut it to the size of the spool. If it looses it cling, which it sometimes does after a long time, I just rub it across my leg and it rechages the static cling.

You could go to a local florist and ask if they would give you some of the netting that they get from flowers that are shipped to them. I find that this works very well and my local florist was very generous to give me a big handful.
