Oh! my you did bring back so many memories of my youth. I always helped my Mom. I cut each raisin into and chopped the nuts. Mom baked them and put each cake into tins with piece of cheese cloth or something similar soaked in wine and a slice of apple on top. She made them the week before Thanksgiving and they ripened until Christmas . We sliced them and they were served with her famous boiled custard which I carefully stirred for her in a double boiler pan. Kay
Use to do this every yr. Can't afford to now. Everything is so costly, especially the pecans. Aunt hasn't had any nuts on her trees now in 3 yrs and she always kept me supplied.
Each cake cost about $60.00 to $70.00 for ingredients..It is something we like to do for two special friends, so they can enjoy it with their family.
I'll bet your house smells wonderful! Don't you wish you could bottle that scent? mmmmm I love fruit cakes.
Yes it would be great. We love making this every year. Thanks for commenting.
Hope your arm bounces back quickly. What a treat you have made. Hope all your other holiday preparations can be accomplished without the same degree of arm pain. Hope the rest goes smooth and pain free. Pam
I'm glad you at least got one after all that hard work. Mmmm, I can imagine how good your house smells and how good those cakes will taste.
Wow! what an effort, I'm cooking mine tomorrow. Bought all the fruit, nuts etc. today when I was out with Mum. I know what you mean about the chopping, stirring etc. my arm hurt like crazy last year from doing just that.
Well it's 10.30 I'm going to take my Valium and go off to bed. See you in the morning! Love Chris
Lots of work christmas cooking, but well worth it. Enjoy your cooked cake. Sandra.
Oh Wow! 15 pounds? I do not think I have seen a cake weigh that much. I think I have to look up glazed fruit, can you get it at the grocery store? I am sure they will be well received! Yum!
The dried and glazed fruit are often on the edge of the produce section in Safeway or in the baking aisle, could also be where the various nuts are found. I would ask at the service desk so you are not having to walk every aisle. Pam
It is glazed not dried fruit make a moist cake. Also has 3/4 cup of Brandy in cake and wrapped in cheese cloth soaked in Brandy.
Yikes, Lyn - that sounds like a lot of work! Bet they are wonderful! Hugs, Laura*
That why we did two cakes for friends. They had it last year and loved it and asked if we would do one for them.
Know what you mean. DH has baked two big double batches of fruit cake cookies and our kitchen smelled better than they tasted. (Oh, no! They were delicious. I didn't mean THAT.)
