Carolyn- I will try to help. First, of course, make sure that you do need to update your machine by checking the software version number on your machine. I believe you can find the version number on the machine information screen.
Do you also have a Ruby? The link with the update file that I included in my comment to glofosmith was specifically for the Ruby. If you have a different machine, you should do a google search to find a web page that deals with the machine you own. So, if your machine is the Ruby (not the Deluxe, or the Royale - those have their own page), click on the link I sent. You will see that there are two update files - one is for the Windows computer, and the other is for the Mac (Apple) computer. Click on the correct file for your computer, (Windows or Mac) and save the file to your desktop.
Look on the right side of the web page, and you will see two sets of instructions on how to do the update. One is for doing the update using the cable that came with your machine, and the other is for doing the update using the USB embroidery stick. In both cases you double click on the zip file you downloaded to open it, and extract the .exe file to your desktop. When you do that, the Update Wizard starts. Click run. You will get instructions on your computer screen on how to proceed. If you are using the cable that came with the machine you will use it to connect the computer to the machine. If you want to use the USB stick, make sure that you select "USB embroidery stick" as the method that you want to use. Please make sure that you don't have any other files on that embroidery stick. When the stick is ready with the update file, you will get the message to move it to your machine, and follow the instructions from there. According to the web page, updating with the cable is a few minutes faster.
Do you have your Ruby manual? If not, you can download the manual from the link I had sent. (http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/su...)
On page 2:12 of the manual you will find more details on how to do the update. If you read these you will probably feel more comfortable doing the update. Still, some folks prefer to take their machine to the dealership to have the updates applied, and that's OK.
Hope this helps.
Judy
Sorry, I let them do it at the shop! Some of this stuff is just too technical - so much to learn.
