I was intrigued and inspired by Peafarm's post yesterday and have now done a similar reverse applique in the hoop.

I added extra lines to my quilt block to do the equivalent of stitching in the ditch.
First I put together the basic quilt block then covered it with a layer of sweatshirt fabric before stitching the extra lines.
I trimmed the sweatshirt fabric away to reveal the pattern while it was still in the hoop.
Pic#1 is the finished product. #2 is the basic block. #3 is before trimming. #4 is the back. (I used old sheeting instead of stabiliser.)

It looks very pretty. I like your way of thinking: see something and work it out for the embroidery machine or whatever craft it happens to be. I set myself comparable challenges.
