Updated to ask: Ok I am wondering now do I use a leave in stabilizer @ the backside when I do an applique stitch or do I use a tear away so that is it not there? Also this will be on a white background fabric so maybe it needs to stay there? I don't really know the answer here. Is it like FSL & I have to use the same thread in the bobbin too?

I wonder if someone could remind me please on how to do applique. Not the embroidery kind. I have cut out all my pieces & have ironed the white fabric the pieces will sit on & I remember that you can use sticky back to stick them on but I would rather not do it that way. Over time this can become hard & Brittle & I know that I do NOT want to do all of these bits by hand so I am hoping there is another way & a cutie can remind me of it. If this were a wall hanging I would not mind using the sticky back but this is for a border on a quilt that I am trying to work on. I started this 2 Christmas's ago & it is time I got it done.

It's such a good feeling to me, when I come here and see someone asking a question and having all of these sweet sisters run to help and give you their best advice. Love you girls!

I usually use a double sided fusible like Stitch Witchery or Steam a Seam...but if you do not want to use a fusible, you could use a temporary spray adhesive or a good ole' school glue stick...the purple one...it will wash out totally with no residue...I use them a lot! Then you can stitch around with the blanket stitch or deco stitch or satin stitch...

Use double sided fusible webbing (pellon) then cut out your pieces. This makes the fusible webbing extend to all edges. Use tweezers to hold the small pieces. Press into place and stitch

That is also my method.

Mine too, but I think she has already cut out all the pieces.

yes I have already cut my pieces out & would rather NOT use the fusible.

Sorry Loralye, I thought you just wanted to avoid the sticky back stabilizer. Because the fusible is soft I thought it would be a good suggestion.

DonĀ“t forget to put a stabilizer on the back when you stich with satin stitch. It will be nicer

You could spray baste your cut out piece to make it stick temporarily and then stitch around the outline with the sewing machine using a applique stitch. That is all I could think of.
