I want to purchase a nice pain of Dressmaker Shears (Long Scissor with a bent handle).I want some that don't hurt my hands.

I'm thinking either 8 inch or 10 inch (21 cm to 25 cm). What do I need to know to get a really good pair?
Do you have a a favorite that has endured through the years, or a new pair you love? Thanks

Try shopping at Nancy's Notions.com They have several styles to choose in the catalog and on line.

Kai scissors are the best. They manufacture them in many sizes. I have switched to them exclusively. They hold their cutting edge and are comfortable for the hands.

I have strength problems with my hands so I bought the fiskars ones. They are great when I have small cutting jobs t do that are less than a couples of mins worth. My hands tire easily due to the spring action being too strong for my hands.
I then bought rechargeable scissors and find it so much easier with bigger cutting jobs. I can cut out an entire outfit or two without hurting my hands. The handle is ergonomic to hold too. You will find a few different brands when you do a Google search.

My hands ache too. I don't know when this arthritis got so bad, but I can't hold scissors for more than one minute now. I need the padded ones also. Thanks for sharing.

I love the Friskers grey ones there are no finger holes just a nice long handle and they cut beautifully with no effort they cost about 20 dollars. Well worth it.

I purchased a pair of scissors 10" ,which turner out to be too heavy with continual use.To avoid buying the wrong size next time,I traced around the old pair which was a comfortable size ,took the paper with the tracing to the craft show & found a good pair which was the same size as the tracing.Still happy with them years later & they are Kai 8"

I must admit that I prefer Gingher's , also. I do however prefer a 7" bent handle. My first good pair was a Wiss, which I always have in a drawer beside my machine. I don't know if they are mfg any more. I have always used them for clipping notches on curved seams as they are so precise and feel good in my hand. Love my Ginghers. I have several, all purchased at Joanns with coupons. Ergo style is good and I don't get blisters when I use it. Good luck on your search, Suzanna

I don't think it is easy buying scissors without trying them for hand size as we are all different. Some people have Arthritis or long hands others have fat short hands.
When I bought my last pair about 2 years ago I got them from a Quilt shop and insisted on trying them on for size. Not a problem with the shop owner.
If you have a friend who sews try hers on for size.

The scissorman at Australian craft shows lets you try them out before you buy

Haven't bought any big scissors in my adult lifetime, but my little Ginghers are extremely sharp and have stayed that way - excellent brand. If it is possible, I would not buy a pair on a cardboard, so you can "try" them on your hand - I have a fat thumb, so fit matters! However, it is getting hard in USA to buy anything that is not on a card on in some kind of plastic security device to cut down on shoplifters! I would think a longer cutting area would be more comfortable and efficient.

I have a fat thumb too! There is a nice little gift set on the Kai site http://kaiscissors.com/kai-gs2-ve... that looks pretty nice and they are berry color!

I love Joanns for just that! Most of the fabric there does not have enough threads per inch. Last time I found they have about 30 bolts of something called "Quilters Treasures" that are really nice. Thanks

I have two pair of small Ginghers and they are nice. What is your opinion on the length. How long is better?

I swear by Kai Scissors...they are a very good quality and price performer...I like them so much better than Gingher scissors...Kai will sharpen them for free if and when they need it...they are definitely a big part of my scissor obsession...The even have some with padded ergonomic handles...
