Glad he didn't rip you off and was honest. Also, glad you have it back so you can produce more of your excellent sewing/embroidery.
I broke a needle on my machine and part of it fell into the machine.. I disconetted the machine and took off the embroidery table and my hubby turned it upside down and shook it and the broken part fell out.. i was so happy ... so maybe try that next time .. if it happens again..
I have done this too when I thought something may have fallen into the machine or under the arm that holds the hoop.
I did this once and the bit of the needle got jammed and I had to make a 6hr round trip to get it out. Not good advice. Hugs
