Grrr. Windows 10 has turned the WiFi on my laptop off and I have tried every work around I can find on the internet and it still will not turn back on. I go to settings, network and internet and when I click on the button to turn WiFi on it bounces right back to off. I have gone into control panel and cannot find any way to turn it back on. I have updated my drivers, bios turned off the computer putting WiFi to sleep to conserve power. I guess this is quite a common problem according to the web sites I have googled. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you solve it. I am so exasperated to not have my laptop. Thank you with hugs, Barba

Rescuer, is it possible for the wifi part my computer to have quit and still have the wired part work so I can plug directly into my router and connect to the internet. It works fine if I use the Ethernet cable but wifi is dead and I cannot turn it on in settings. The button just bounces back to off. Thank you with hugs, Barba

That is probably a driver issue. So, yes, it is possible as they are 2 different physical parts. I think one of the pages offered a "how to" update or rollback your driver. That should be your next step.

rescuer by rescuer 04 Mar 2016

In answer to your other reply to me -- A new wireless would require someone that works on your brand of computer. They rarely go bad like that though. Just do the driver rollback or update (whichever one of those will work) and see if it works for you.

barba by barba 05 Mar 2016

I updated my drivers and that did not work so I thought I would do a system restore to before my wifi quit. The restore said it could not change my files because my antivirus was preventing it. It said to turn off my antivirus and try restore again. BUT my wifi is back on. I have no idea why as it said restore did not change anything. Just glad it is back for a while anyway. Thank you for all your help. I have bookmarked all these pages in case I need them in the future. Thanks with hugs, Barba

I am sorry not to be any help but you have certainly helped me. All these posts have definitely decided for me that I will NOT be downloading Windows 10. I am so very happy with Windows 7.

Have you tried connecting to Microsoft? I know that sounds silly if you can't get on the internet, but try plugging the laptop to your router and connecting to Microsoft support. Maybe this is a problem that they need to correct.

The links added are good ones to review. If one of the issues exists, you can tell by plugging in the computer to a "hard wire" CAT5 or CAT6 instead of using the wireless. If the internet is still not working correctly then follow the instructions based on that issue. If you have Cisco or other VPN software then you will need to have your registry edited. I do not recommend that be done by the average user. Get professional help.

I can connect by plugging into my router. I did the registry edit by following directions on one of the links and still no wifi. According to device manager it is working properly. Very frustrated. Can the modem still work when plugged in but wireless part be dead so I cannot turn it on and it be that I need a new wireless thingy in my computer? Thank you with hugs, Barba

Wifi button is on. I was downloading my mail and all of a sudden the red x appeared on my wifi icon and that was the end. I tried to turn it back on in settings and it will not. Thank you with hugs, Barba

Whoever designed windows 10 did not leave in the choices that many of us use every time the computer is on. I really dislike windows 10 and I think it is slower than windows 7. Thank you with hugs, Barba

Hi- I am sorry that you are having this problem - it can be maddening, I know. I do not have windows 10, so cannot offer advice based on personal experience. If you normally connect to the internet wirelessly, have you tried to connect using an Ethernet cable connected directly to your modem? Can you see your network, but simply cannot connect to it? If the issue is that the laptop is put to sleep, have you gone into the power settings area and changed the setting there so that the laptop is never put to sleep? (If you do this, make sure to watch you battery level, and plug it in as needed.)

You said that you have tried every work-around that you have found on the internet, but I wonder if you have seen any of the following pages. I ask because sometimes my husband and I will look up something on Google and come up with different results - perhaps because we are using different browsers.

This is a blog with a couple of solutions that some say fixed their Wi-Fi : http://www.drivethelife.com/windo...
Other sites, in case you have not seen them:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-...

http://www.redmondpie.com/fix-no-...

http://windowsreport.com/wifi-sto...

If you have an HP laptop here is what they recommend you try for their system: http://support.hp.com/us-en/docum...
Dell also has a page with possible fixes for their laptops that you can look up.

Hope you find a solution to your internet problem soon! Please let us know what worked for you. Good luck! Judy

I have been to some of those sites and tried their work arounds. I have a sony vio that is 4 years old and did not find a work around on their site but I got so frustrated I had to stop. I will check out the other sites and hopefully get wifi back. Thanks with hugs, Barba

Just finished checking every link and tried all the fixes. Still no wifi internet. It does work if I connect directly to router but that is a pain. By the number of people complaining, I am not alone in my quest to get wifi back. Thank you again with hugs, Barba

Barba, do you have VPN software installed on your computer? I was just reading that if you do, it should have been uninstalled before upgrading to Windows 10. If it is fewer than 30 days since you upgraded, you can revert to your previous version of windows, uninstall that software, and then do the upgrade again (if you have decided that you still really want Windows 10, that is...) You can read more about this here: http://coursecode.net/writings/20...
I wish I could have helped you fix your internet problem. Sorry. Judy

Barb4 by Barb4 03 Mar 2016

Could not find that software but did the registry edit anyway. Still no wifi. Thank you with hugs, Barba

jalinnell by jalinnell 03 Mar 2016

You say that you did the registry edit, but it didn't fix he problem with your Wi-Fi. I presume that you restarted the computer after doing the edit, and found it did not help. Here is a new link that talks about the Wi-Fi issue. I do not know if these instructions are the same as those that you followed for the edit, but it also gives step by step instructions on how to change the power management for the network adapter. It is from Lenovo, but it sounds pretty generic to me.

Hopefully this helps. Judy

jalinnell by jalinnell 03 Mar 2016

Well, if you have tried everything that has been suggested, try turning off your anti virus for a bit, and see if that helps. If it does, you may need to update it or reinstall it. If that is not the problem, don't forget to turn it back on!
Other than that, I can only think of doing a "system restore" to a time when everything was working, going back to your previous version of windows, or doing a clean install of windows 10. (I have read that the Wi-Fi problem is not an issue for those that have done a clean install.) The other choice is to seek professional help.
If you do get it fixed, Barba, please do let us know how you did it.
BTW, only mainstream support has ended for windows 7 - you would still get security patches until January 14, 2020. Here is a very interesting article with information about that: http://www.pcworld.com/article/24... Judy

Thank you so much. I will check these out when I get home. Yes I did the reboot many times hoping wifi would be picked up. I do not know if I can roll back because I am over the roll back limited time. Will definitely check. Thank ypu with hugs, Barba

As I told Rescurer above, I tried to do a system restore to a point before my wifi quit. My computer said it could not change my files because my antivirus was preventing it. Said to turn off antivirus and try restore again. BUT my wifi is back on. Go Figure!! I have no idea why if my files and drivers could not be changed. I have bookmarked all your links in case it leaves me again. Thank you again with hugs, Barba

jalinnell by jalinnell 08 Mar 2016

So glad it is now working for you!! I wonder if the antivirus could have been part of the problem in the first place. One of the sites that I saw had mentioned that the anti virus can have an effect on Wi-Fi. Thanks for giving me this update! Judy

When I tried to download Windows 10 Judy, I got almost to the end when it said if you do finish this you will lose your Windows Media Centre. I don't want to lose that as I watch Television here on my computer screen and so I didn't download. Sorry I can't help you with your wifi issue. Maybe when 'rescuer' comes on, she might know something about it. Love Chris

I wish I had never updated but I had windows 7 which was no longer going to be supported so I took the plunge and really regret doing so. This is so annoying. I used to use my laptop in my bedroom after everyone went to bed. Now I have to carry it downstairs and plug it into the router in the living room. very aggravating. Thank you with hugs, Barba

Yes, check for "airplane mode" a little airplane pictures comes up in the lower right corner with the other icons. The other thing to check is if your laptop itself has a wifi on/off button (probably with the function buttons) - many do (including HP and Dells in my family) that will also stop you from connecting. Good Luck!

Here are some ideas. You probably tried them already, but that is all I can think off.
Right click on window symbol and sign out
Reboot
Make sure you are not in airplane mode.
Reboot your router. It may not be a windows issue.

barba by barba 02 Mar 2016

Already did those. Not in airplane mode. Have rebooted so many times. Even did a hard shut down and did not work. Thank you with hugs, Barba

Depending upon the model of laptop you have try fn key and f3 or fn key and f12 together. On a Dell I believe it is the fn key and f5 - there is usually a little picture of a radio tower on the top fkey to show you which one you need to click.

barba by barba 02 Mar 2016

It is a Sony Vio. No radio tower on any of my keys. Tried them anyway and did not work. Thank you with hugs, Barba
