Hate to hear this. Had one near some years back but it closed, fortunately I seem to have a never ending supply. A friend called 2 days ago ,had me meet her and her car trunk was loaded with fabric for me. Both large and small pieces. Some as much as 3 or more yards in 1 piece. She has R A in her hands, they're getting all twisted up. No longer able to sew. God is so good to me/Lillian
So sad to see this happen but they have gone down hill in the past few years. Do you think sales on the internet have contributed to this? I do not have a store close to me any longer, so i will probably not frequent the sales. Kay
I think the selling of cheap, poor quality cotton, mostly from China by Hancock's and others has nearly ruined the fabric market.
They had to MUCH craft stuff for my taste. I can recall when a fabric store was just a fabric store. Of course we were using bones as needles back then ha ha.
This is so sad. I have to travel 30 miles to Hancock as our little towns Walmart does not carry fabric. The next fabric store - Joanns- is 45 miles in the other direction.. I guess someone does not want crafters......
My fabric stores are in the same town but about 50 minutes away. Now we will just have 2.
My SIL shot me a text with a link to the news channel, in out area about this. He knows I frequent the store and his kids get the rewards of my shopping...I mean 'labor'-lol- so sad, as now we will just have Walmart and Hobby Lobby.
I don't have one near me but I read from other crafters that the prices appear to have been marked up (or returned to original prices) and then a discount taken off of that. So buyer beware, know the value of what you're buying before you purchase.
From an article I just read, they started a "going out of business sale"
Friday already and will continue but no date has been set for the last day of business.
They say it will be finished before summer.
This is the second fabric store in my area to close. It isn't because of a lack of customers here. I hope we get to hang on to the rest. I am afraid Walmart may be the cause for some demise.
And in my area, Wal-Mart dropped the fabric department, because sales were not high enough.
I went to Hancocks on Tuesday to take advantag of the sale.Everything was priced too high. Not a sale. However a new WAlmart (15 miles away has opened and has a fabulous line of fabric. even carries a great line of sewing thread 4 a lot less than my fav quilt shop. $3 vs 8 per spool.
Living in Canada we don't have any Hancock stores here but I have heard alot about them. As a fabric lover, it becomes more and more difficult to find stores to supply our passion. We went from 8 fabric stores in my area to three and as you can imagine their prices are now ridiculous. I am so pleased however to have found a little fabric store (with lots of 100 % cotton) near my new home and her prices are 1/3 what the bigger stores offer. Of course I still shop in the states and order from Connecting Threads.
Sad to see these stores closing.
This makes me sad, although there isn't a Hancock in my town. It seems the way of the home made clothing is falling to the side.
