Chip of the old block?

I am a very proud oma - this is my almost 7 year old granddaughter during her first sewing lesson her mother gave her and 3 friends yesterday.

update:
2nd sewing lesson: making a pot holder. After stitching the three layers together with (more or less) parallel lines the difficult task of attaching the binding.
Next lesson end of May (due to May holidays) and I will be there myself to watch the fun

Adorable - they work all so concentrated. I think it is the greatest fun in life to pass on your own creativity and joy working to the younger ones or, of course, also friends who said: I am not talented at all and then they notice, you start with an easy step number one and this goes on and on.....The girls will ever remember their first craft work thanks to "Oma" and Mama.

Thank you. Their attention wanes after an hour and a half, which is not bad at their age. So the projects should be doable in that amount of time; with some drinks half way their 2-hour lesson is just about right. You are right, talent is not the deciding factor when starting, just take one step at a time and enjoy and learn. Having said that some learn much faster than others, even at this stage.

Don't you just want to hug her. Learning all about mitered corners.

Pretty impressive those mitered corners in lesson #3. It's the (non-sewing) mothers that are impatient, their wishes for the next lesson: a zipped toilet bag, a cuddly toy or a skirt.
Esther is thinking of a pincushion and a needle case.

mops by mops 27 Apr 2016

oops, lesson #2.

And the next hug will be May 7. Looking forward to it.

Oh my goodness, a new Cutie in the making. I would be proud too Martine. She is adorable and just look at the concentration on her precious face. Bet she hangs on to the potholder all her life./ Lillian

Knowing her I think she'll insist on her mum using it, Esther on keeping it. No idea who'll win :)

Just beautiful! I love the little hands, on the second picture and the look on her face, on the first! No wonder you're proud! I hope Nora learns too. She is interested but at two, she is curious about everything! Tell your little one we look forward to her projects on Cute! She's a Cutie already!-Toogie

Let her watch and give her small tasks - and she'll want you to teach her in a few years time. With a gran like you she'll become a great sewer/embroiderer.

I can understand why you are a very proud oma. Am so impressed that they already started at 7 years old. Found it cute to look at her very serious face :-) Glad they are enjoying it as well. Have fun with them on their 3rd lesson.

Martine - it looks like she is doing a terrific job with her pink potholder so far. I bet the end of May can't get here fast enough for you. You must be so excited to go see the girls in action, with lesson #3. Maybe she will make YOU something this time around!

If you can get them interested it is great fun. The daughters of my son (11 and 8) are being taught by their other gran who lives much closer. The older one made quite a few simple tops and skirts; the younger one who started a couple of years later, made zipped bags and a book cover. As there's no embroidery machine available, so no in the hoop items, just putting in zips the 'normal' way.

Martine, how wonderful that she is learning from the best.Shell be a great seamstress someday. At least she isn't learning on a treadle machine as some of us did.I know you are so proud. Stella

This is a lovely photo. I have a similar one of my DD when she was little. I remember having to tape a block behind the foot pedal to slow it down. She liked to sew a bit too fast for my liking! I always worried she would sew through her finger! Now we have machine with the speed regulator I am much more relaxed when kids sew

Yes, speed regulator helps a lot for our peace of mind!

I do so hope I get a sewer from at least 1 of 6. Odds are in my favor I'd think!

There must be at least one with you as a role model! I've got 3 out of 5 so far.
I'll tell her - she'll be here next Sunday with her mother as a surprise for my hubby's birthday. Fortunately he does not visit Cute so it will stay a secret...

Oh, what fun you will have! Enjoy your party and listen for the cheering! ;)

She's one determined girl, and she requested lessons herself - so I am sure she won't give up soon. Has been helping her mum for some time and wants to be able to do it all by herself. I am sorry she lives so far away.

Wonderful! Well, she probably got the sewing bug from you, and all the beautiful clothes you have made her over the years. Also, she has the best teachers. Kids learn so fast, she will be ready to try embroidery by the time you visit next. Look at the determination on face. She will do just fine. Can't wait to see her first projects.

My daughter is determined to teach them methodically: starting with stitching nice lines and curves, then a cover for a binder that will hold their tests. She might decide to have them embroider their names/initials on the cover. There's only one embroidery machine, so I might offer her my Brother 190D that I only use sporadically for the inbuilt Disney designs.

I was about the same age, but at that age I had to stand up to use the treadle my mother had.
