Hi Cuties, can anyone tell me how to do a fix stitch (you know the one that goes around the edge of the hoop just to hold fabric down before you start embroidering.)

On my Husqvarna it's called a FIX stitch and I can't find what it's called in the Brother Operation Manual!

HELP PLEASE! Love Chris, Newcastle, Australia.

Have been using basting designs for years, especially for holding the topping/washaway stabiliser down around any design being done on a towel or some fabric with loops. It's usually a fairly long stitch, making it easy to remove, which I normally do from the back. I have basting files for any hoops I use saved on my machine or storage devices so that I can add them to any design using the Edit function. I hope you got them sorted out, Chris, though the generic ones are fine (as long as it suits your hoop size), without the need to make your machine's individual quirks cooperate :)

Thanks Marianne, I've used the basting stitch from the machine, but it's not big enough. Love Chris

Very seldom hoop towels, felt and thick fabrics and therefore saving my hoops. So easy to remove the baste stitching afterwards. Just download the baste stitches for your hoop sizes onto all your USB (storage embroidery devices. Works for me!

Chris...I think your Quattro has the same icons that my BabyLock does...After you hit the "Sew" button and then the "Sewing" button, the basting frame icon is the one that has a flower in the middle with a basting stitch around it...that is the basting frame function to add the basting frame to your design in the machine...fingers crossed that you have the same icon I do... Sometimes, however, when you use this button, it may force you to use a larger hoop. So, when this happens you can do a couple of things.
1. Go to the notebook (icon with lines on it at bottom of screen) and forward to Page 7. Here you can adjust the basting distance from embroidery (less or more). By lowering the distance, it may reduce the overall design (including the basting frame) so you can use the hoop you wanted to start with. Be sure to leave enough distance between the basting frame and embroidery, the the embroidery doesn't catch in the basting stitches.
2. You can simply reduce the size of the design, to fit within the size parameters of the hoop.

Thanks Kim, this is exactly what I'm looking for. And you are right about the sizing I put it on the one I've just done and it was too small, so I just unpicked it when it was finished. I can't get it to be any larger than 12mm (0.47"). Love Chris

Yep, this is what I found in the manual I sent you Chris.

No of course not, but I need someone who knows the Brother machine and you don't have one. I'm going to take the machine into Zig zag next week and find out how to do it. Luv Chris

meganne by meganne 07 Oct 2016

Yes I do....... a Brother Innovis 750D, but it doesn't do basting stitches either unless I install one of my basting designs first.

Did you read the other post from Vickiannette?

I have this possibility on my ruby of husqvarna. It is very easy to use the button FIX. You have just to press on it before beginning your embroidery. You press on the button FIX instead the button "Start Stop", and when, the basting stitches have ended, you begin your embroidert by pressing start-stop. I reduce the speed of the machine during the FIX to avoid crease

Do you have Embird? I just found a You Tube demo with how to add the basting stitch to a design.
Might help you.

It is called "basting frames" and often available for free download. However, cannot remember where I got my from. Wish you success - Maria

I know it's a feature of the Designer (and the Ruby etc) which does not involve software.
My simple Brother 190D offers frames and a choice of stitches for them, one of them being a basting stitch. So a rectangle in the right size works well. Can't combine the frame with another design on the machine, have to do it in two steps. I would have expected your newer and more expensive machine to have the basting feature - by any other name.

That's what I reckon too Martine, but I just can't work out how to use it. I found it in the area on page 7/8 which comes up when you hit a little icon down on the lower left hand side of the screen, but it's not really clear then what to do. The manual doesn't help much either!!! Love Chris

Reen has some basting files for Brother at Embroidery Garden. I have other places bookmarked, if these are not what you are looking for.

Glad you found a basting tack down to use...Hmmm, maybe it is the size again, Chris...perhaps when you add the basting stitch is just a bit too big for your machine hoop...

I was thinking that too, so have minimised the design a tad, but it still won't show. I'm going to have a rest today. Got to take Mum to Eye doctor to see how she is doing after her Cataract surgery. Love Chris

dragonflyer by dragonflyer 06 Oct 2016

Perhaps it is not the main design itself, but the actual basting stitch outline...

If you change the colour to black you will most properly see it this has happened to me once I could not see it in the machine because the colour was white try it it might be the problem.

Sorry Carol, my complaint below doesn't give the proper meaning - the whole design is not showing up - I've put the basting stitch around the design, but nothing at all is showing up on the USB - which by the way has nothing on it. I took all the designs off so it was blank, but the design just won't show. I'm really peeved, can you tell? Love Chris

carolpountney by carolpountney 06 Oct 2016

Having all sorts of trouble - I've downloaded a basting stitch put it around the design and the damn USB where it is on won't let me see it on my sewing machine. So I put it back into the computer and sure enough there it is! I'm giving up for now as it's dinner time here in Australia - well for me anyway. Trev went to a ex BHP gent's luncheon today and isn't hungry. I made a beautiful Chicken Sate last night so I'll have that with some rice.

Tomorrow will be better I hope! Thanks for everyone's help. Love Chris

Change the thread color of the design to black and see if that helps. I've transferred a totally white design before and I couldn't see it at all.

dragonflyer by dragonflyer 06 Oct 2016

Perhaps it is the size that's the problem...If your design is almost the size of the hoop and then you add a basting stitch outline around it, the design might now be a tad bit bigger than your sewing machine will allow for that hoop...I have had this happen to me before..design was okay without the basting tack down, but too big for the size hoop with it...therefore it would not show on the sewing machine...

hi Chris, on my Pfaff it's called "basting in the hoop". It has to be done before your embroidery design has begun. Then it ends and says it's finished and this is when you press 'ok' to start your design. hope all is well with you. We had much wind and pelting rain, but thankfully only some not-too-bad damage [a tree on a fence, and a grain silo blew to bits] Floods in Virginia are terrible, expecting our vegetables to be pricey! xx

Thanks Vicki, I'll see if I can find it in the Brother Manual I have. So glad you didn't get too much damage. My Sister who lives in Tumby Bay said it was an amazing storm. My girlfriend who lives in Robertstown (near Clare) lost power for 4 days and the generator kicked in, but still no hot water for a while. All's back to normal now. I hear about the market gardens too, vegies will be dear! Love Chris

Could be called tacking stitch

pennifold by pennifold 06 Oct 2016

Thanks Rescuer - I've found it on the machine it's on page 7/8 it's called Embroidery Basting Distance, so I tried pressing the little arrows that are there and I can't get it to work! Never mind, I'll just have to wait till I go back into the shop where I bought it and find out how to use it. Love Chris

there are quite a few free ones, just google for more. I know some machines have them built in

Thanks Toogie, I'll try to find one, but there should be one on the Brother for the embroidery section. For the price of this machine I would imagine it should be there! Love Chris

Yes it probably is but where is your question. Brother manual are not an easy read at the best of times to my mind. Our machines probably have many functions we are unaware of just like our computers

Yes that's what I thought too Bev, but it only shows up in the Sewing index on page 98. I can't find anything about a basting stitch in the Embroidery section. I am perplexed!! Love Chris
