The left hand picture is the origami candle mat I made using the sewing machine only. The one on the right is made in the hoop with 9 sections. (Mostly because I couldn't face 12 hoopings!!) The ribbon for the bows is added as part of the design so there is no hand sewing. The design also includes the stitching lines for joining the sections together.

Very easy - each square is one hooping. They have to be joined on the sewing machine.

It looks very festive.
I can understand the 12 hoopings aversion. I have not even stitched out my 9-section ones, did it just one a single time to see how my border looked. Then digitised a few more.
