In my torch welding class I finally passed the stuff I should've got done a week ago and got to start brazing, but it's hard, and I wanted to waste time, and I had an idea. So I got a 5/32" filler rod from somewhere and heated it in spots and bent it into a horizontal spool pin to put on my thread stand for those foil ribbon type metallic threads I have for christmassey things. (when the hancock near me closed down it was super cheap and I was like Yes! I might use this one day! Maybe!) It's angled slightly upwards so the spool hopefully won't try to fall off because it's too thin to put a spool cap on. I also got done with all the leaf pieces for the napkin rings and now I'm working on the actual ring part. My cheap off brand 5x7 hoop lets me crank it a lot tighter than my brother one, which wouldn't hold the stabilizer tight even screwed in all the way. I guess because it's too thin to hold onto. But anyway, the cheap hoop goes tighter so I was able to put three of them in one hooping with no puckering or registration issues at all. Not having to re hoop for every one or two means I got half of them (6) done today in the span of like 3 hours. The stitching only took 2 hours but I took a break to wash the dishes from the pie I made the other day.

I still think to slow the machine down helps with metallic thread. Nice job!

Great thinking. You might try an eraser off of the end of a pencil to hold your thread onto the stand.

I also read if you put it in a McDonald cup with the lid on. Pull your thread throw the straw hole sit it on the side of your machine that it works great to.

What about using a metal coat hanger and a piece of wood drill a hole in the middle put one end of the coat hanger in and bend the other end to hold your spool of thread.

Lovely lace. I had no idea we had a welder in the group. So much talent, so little time...

Oh ho! My husband welds and I have extra of the heavy thread stands. Thank you for sharing this and I love the comment about the cork on the end to hold the spool. Clever ladies. Very clever.

Beautiful FSL! And very clever spool holder for those metallic threads that are beautiful and pesky to work with.

I got a set of a 6x10, 5x7, 4x4, and the not so useful 1x2 on amazon for like $80

Looks great. You might be able to put a rubber band around the pin as a spool cap. You can't put it down the length of the pin or it would keep the spool from spinning freely. Or drill a hole in a small slice of wood if you have problems keeping the spool on.

I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time. Thanks for posting. Beautiful napkin rings too.

Very creative! You might try sliding a cork on the end to keep the spool in the pin. Your napkin rings look great so far.
