Help Cuties!!

Has anyone used Marathon Rayon 40 Embroidery Thread? I used the thread for a FSL Lace stitch-out, soaked it in tap ( not hot ) water over night ,so that the lace would be real soft and it shrunk..... Would there be any other reason it reduced in size.? Janette

Rayon is very unstable. If you have ever had rayon fabric you know it can shrink and then shrink again.
I never use rayon thread, although it has beautiful sheen, it is not colorfast, it can shrink and it breaks easier.
I like the Marathon polyester thread it also has (although not as good as rayon) a nice sheen. More importantly, though it is stronger and is colorfast, and it doesn't shrink.

Thankyou sewdoctor, I decided that maybe it was the tension in the bobbin??? It only takes that, if it is not threaded properly and it becomes tight, the tension will not be normal. Janette

I have used rayon thread for years and have never had it shrink or the colours run. I don't know what brand you found unstable but Robison Anton, Madeira, Sulky, Marathon, Theda, Royal have never shrunk or bled colour. I still have some old Sew Mail threads which I have kept away from sunlight and they are as good as new.

I have some rayon blouses which haven't shrunk either.

I received a box of Marathon Rayon threads yesterday and with the threads there was a sheet with Care instructions. I have never seen this before or maybe I have never noticed but if anyone is interested in looking at it please just PM me.

I use Marathon threads. Actually had some delivered to me today. Since taking my Brother to a Janome Guy my machine will now not sew Polyester without looping. Have been too busy to take it back and go without my machine so have been sewing all Rayon.

Janette,
Is it a design you have used previously? If you have used two layers of Vilene it should have been fine. It makes me think it could be the actual design.

Hello Helen,Yes, I have used the design before and it is now about 20% smaller than when stitched out. It could easily be the design but if it stitched out OK then why did it shrink when the stabilizer was removed? I"ll try to do another stitching so I can show the difference.

Janette,
It certainly is a puzzle. I have used Marathon threads and haven't had any problems with shrinkage. Maybe it was the overnight soaking. I just wash the stabiliser away with not too hot water until it doesn't feel sticky any more. I prefer my lace to have a bit of "body" so it keeps it's shape.

I have used Marathon threads for years and never had any problems at all with any sort of embroideries. Have used both sorts of wss as said below with no issues at all. Don't have it too tight in the hoop. Sandra.

I've done fsl with rayon and have not had this problem. I'd iron it using something like Best Press lightly on it. Whenever my mother made lace, she'd stetch it out flat and pin it in shape.

Yes I do pin the lace to its shape as it dries. Thanks Janette

I think pennifold is correct I have never had any trouble with Marathon treads been using them for years, but my wss looks like vilene and have had no problem but the wss that looks like plastic I have had issues if I have pulled it too tight

I use the WSS that looks like Vilene double thickness. I buy it from Echinda Embroidery Club in Brisbane. Thanks Janette

Hi Janette, the only thing I can think of is maybe the WSS was hooped tighter than normal and pulled the threads in when you washed out the WSS. I've put a link from Embroidery Library, it may help you.

I'm sure others will come along from the other side of the world soon who may offer you more assistance than me. Love Chris
