I use Metro threads and have been very pleased and they often have really good sales. They also offer different sized kits of threads that might be nice to start with to see how you like them. I've never been disappointed with the thread thus far.
I decided to order sigma thread, so far I am very pleased with it. I have not had any problems with the colors that I have tried so far. I will most likely purchase the 150 spools while they are still on sale. I just wanted to thank everyone who gave me the advice to try them.
Thank you all for your recommendations, several people ask where I am from I live in western NY.
If you are just starting out creating your thread collection, you will probably want to just buy polyester thread for a while. You won't have to think about whether the item will incur harsh washing conditions. Bleach won't affect poly. On the other hand, the rayons do seem to have a glow of their own but sometimes they will fade if bleached.
Some sites offer free shipping if you buy a certain amount and watch for sales too. I usually buy the 1000myd/m spools because they are cheaper per yard than the smaller ones. The 3000m cones are nice if you use a lot of one color like a Christmas red, however, they are pretty big and you have to have a place to store them and the big size may not be convenient to use with your machine. They are expensive too. It pays to shop around.
It may be difficult to buy just one spool to test out if there isn't a shop near you to purchase a different brand from without buying online, but with shipping costs the one spool may be more expensive than you want to spend. The only threads I can now get locally is Isacord and Florini and one of my machines shreds Florini. All the other stores that carried other thread brands have gone out of business. However, I do love the Madiera and Robinson Anton rayons and even their poly is nice too, but I have to buy them online and the colors on your computer may not match exactly what you get. Even buying a real thread chart, it is sometimes difficult to see what a small sample will look like in a big spool. Having said that, the one problem I've had with buying threads from several different brands is that the colors may not go well together. For example, I have blues from a few different mfgs, but trying to get 5 shades of blue that go together is not easy. For the time being, if you find a thread that you, and your machine, really like and you want to build your thread collection, I'd buy three shades of a color from the same line....like a dark, medium, and light blue. That way when you need to do shading, you won't have to deal with the problem of conflicting colors. You'll also have a bunch of light threads if you are doing a pastel palette, or darks or mediums.
I live in the UK and buy mainly from my dealer and eBay. I don't live near my dealer so can't pop in as needed :(
Whatever brand you decide to try, please buy only a few spools to try. I bought a whole set of a brand that others love and I hate it as it shreds terribly. There are lots of brands less expensive out there. Try Designs by Sick. Hugs. Nan W
Threadart has a nice thread and it is on sale now 30% off plus an additional 10% with code.
I also use ThreadArt thread. Have never had any problems.

I use mostly Metro Embroidery threads...I purchase the 5,000 meter cones and I have all colors...I have never had a problem with Metro threads. I also use their stabilizers and pre-wound bobbins, all with great success. I highly recommend them. I am not sure what part of the world you are in, but if the shipping costs work out, I would suggest you give them a try.
Where do you live?
Prices vary from Country to Country and even State to State.
I am in Australia and have found great prices on line.
Especially in Canada but the shipping costs are so high.
Also some USA sites have terrific specials and free shipping in the USA but not outside. But saying this I have still ordered from overseas at times when it works out cheaper.
Metro threads are lovely threads to embroider with and my Janome 500E has no problem with them. I bought once when they had a sale on $1 or $2 a spool.
Have fun with your machine.
With a bit more information I am sure someone will be able to direct you to a good site or store.
I purchase my thread at Metro Thread and stabilizer at sewforless.com.
