Hope I'm in the right place. I'm in hell at the moment as my external drive is dying & I'm frantically trying to rescue & move what folders or designs that haven't been lost forever & there are so many that have been affected. I have a new external on the way but I'm so upset at the moment, I have been able to go to a few sites that let you download again so thank you to these people who leave designs in the cart but alas some I will never see again so back to the big job ahead of me

Happened to me twice. My SIL is a IT-man and rescued my data. He has lots of programmes but none of them could recognize the embroidery-formats. I do save my files to an external drive or CD but additionally I zip the files and put them in the folder because all the zippered files from the last crash have been saved and rescued.

Hugs

How awful for you. I feel your panic. I know how panicked I was when I misplaced a folder. I can't imagine losing most of them! I agree with you that it is so very thoughtful of digitizers that keep track of your orders and will let you download them more than the one time. Good luck in retrieving your designs.

This is horrific! I know how panicky I get when I think I've lost something on my computer. I've learned to backup my files to an external hard drive often so I don't lose everything. If you live near a bigger town, you can call them and see if they can try to recover your lost files if you bring them the computer instead of having someone come to your house. Hope you are able to recover everything.

thank you I have to check the files (every 1 I have as some of the designs inside their folders have now become an empty square with no picture of designs & zeros instead of stitch counts etc) so not a happy chappie. Have been given a couple of things to try that I will check out. Irene

Vicki I have checked my folder & yours are safe. LOL. Thanks you for the offer. Irene

thanks everyone for feeling my pain with me. LOL. I know a lot of people have had this happen to them & it's an awful feeling. Do you think we need to get a life outside sewing? LOL. I wouldn't have 1 if I didn't have this site to go on a daily basis, At least I know there's human contact out there

If you have the money, hire a qualified tech to recover it for you. It is true techs have software and hardware that most find incredible.
A couple of things: don't turn off the drive or the computer -- it will only work for so long before it doesn't anymore. Once you have all you "need" you can try to do a disk recovery. It might help you recover designs not accessible right now.
Cutie, data you want saved should be in three places -- three different places.

thank you but to get a techie where I live is impossible. We have a young man in town who we made arrangements with to look at the comp & we never heard from him again, never showed up or a phone call after saying he would be there on a certain day, this is not the 1st time this has happened in this town when we happen to have techies??. We can get them from other towns but then there's a fee for them to drive here on top of the bill so it's very expensive in the long run. I'll live without some designs I think. LOL

I'm glad you will live! I know the feeling -- waiting on techs lol Techs are not always known for dependability or courtesy. It is one reason I had good job security when I could still work. Good luck!

My advice is shop around for a computer tech. They have tools we never dreamed of so maximum files can be salvaged. Shopping around you can find best hourly rate.

Saying a little prayer for you, Irene, that someone with more computer savvy than me will be by shortly to offer help.
