A bit of background information : I am part-owner of a narrowboat (see http://www.sylph.org.uk if I've lost you already...!) and have been working on some designs for decorating the boat. Traditionally, British canal narrowboats and canalware (pots, pans, buckets, etc. etc.) are decorated with designs of roses and castles. There are certain traditional elements for the castle design in particular - there must be mountains in the background, a lake, river and bridge, and swans and boats on the lake. Apart from that, it's up to the artist and no two are ever exactly alike. I've done some designs for our boat and thought they might work as embroideries too - and this is the result. I don't know how I'm going to use the embroidery though - maybe a tea cosy, curtain tiebacks, something like that. (I've also got a lot of filet crochet to do to trim the windows, also a traditional feature!)

I love canal boats and the bright decorations, especially the enamelled utensils. Love these designs too. Well done.

These look stunning Dianne. You've certainly built all the elements into the castle picture. How often do you use your longboat? Have you ever been through the Falkirk Wheel? We visited it on one of our trips to the UK. It is an amazing feat of engineering. *4U

I've been on it twice so far this year and have another 2 trips booked. I've not done the Falkirk Wheel (which is in Scotland in case anyone doesn't know) and Sylph is currently based on the Oxford Canal which is in the south of England, and at 3 miles an hour..... :-)
