I came across a well written article (in BBC News) about the invention of the sewing machine and how it somewhat liberated women. I was blown away by what I read. Of course,I knew everything sewn before it was sewn by hand (think of those long dresses and multiple petticoats, etc). Seamstresses were paid a pittance while it took her 14 hours to make a shirt. The article is well worth a reading in total - men didn't think a woman were intelligent enough to use a sewing machine. Also, interesting information about Mr. Singer! I'm anxious to know what all my Sister Cuties from around the world think! hugs, Laura

Thanks for the link. I did not realize he took over and revised an already existing design. Great read. Hugs. Nan

I hated to read some of the comments about women! Just shows how subjugated women were then.

Laura, thanks for bringing this to others attention. I read it a few days ago. A few years ago I wrote that I had been to a wedding in Paignton and I discovered a museum full of Singer machines. Turned out the building where the wedding was had been built by Singer. After Singer left the USA he lived in England. Singer had a rather colourful life.
