I got my Mountmellick that I ordered today. The photo showed a big cone that I thought I was buying. However, only 10 meters. It was in the fine print that you did not by a cone. It'll be a good start, but probably not enough to finish a project that I have in mind. Maybe I'll just do something small before attacking something like a pillow.
I have used candle wicking thread when do Mountmellick embroidery, it looked fine and because I also like to do this type of embroidery I can get a lot of different colours. I know that it is usually done in cream or white, but I do like to experiment.
There is an embroidery machine set, but I just cannot remember who the digitiser is. Thinking perhaps one of the African digitisers. out.
I'd worry that my machine would not like the thickness of the thread. Sounds interesting to do on a machine.
For those of you who are not familiar with this style of embroidery, I thought I'd post a photo for you!
Hi
I have just been sorting through my designs and came across what I thought was Mountmellick.. I have a card from Studio Bernina called Historical Embroidery by Pamela Burke, it is Carrickmacross, sorry if I got your hopes up. Also I have Carrickmcross from Threads & Scissors which is as you all no African site.
First I have heard of it so naturally intrigued, Looks beautiful reminds me of heirloom done as tone on tone ie white on white
best of luck
big hugs from London xx
Many years ago I had a colleague who studied hand embroidery to an advanced level and I loved the Mountmellick work she produced it was stunning
Hi, I have a book on Mountmellick, the thread used in this book I quote:
Matt thread is used, as a contrast to the sheen on the fabric. Often only one or two different thicknesses of thread were used on each piece. When the work was very large for example, as bedcover, the threads used were very thick, in keeping with the scale. End of quote. I'm going to use a thread on a knitting cone I have, which is crochet no. 5. This I will try out when I have decided on which of the many patterns that are in this book. I hope this helps you. Hugs from Maureen
Yes, it does. Thanks. I'm looking for a source of this type of thread, but so far no luck. What size needle do you use?
Ooops. I just looke below. When I tried to google it, I didn't succeed getting to that site. Guess I didn't search hard enough!
Did more searching. I'm thinking of using sashiko thread as it looks like the right size and texture. Will talk to my friend who knits too.
Hi again, use a needle with a big eye that will fit the cotton you use. According to my Candlewicking book here in South Africa we use crochet number 5, 8 or 12. According to this book one can get the crochet cotton in the United States. Keep looking and keep us up-dated. Hugs from Maureen
I had never heard of this type of embroidery, so I Googled it. Here's what I found: Mountmellick Embroidery is a dimensional white on white embroidery done in white knitting cotton on a heavy white cotton satin jean. I've found a listing on Etsy for spools of yarn and a whole lot of books about this beautiful form of embroider.
Hope this helps! I'd love to see your work!
Apparently, this thread ships from England and the estimate charge for shipping is $30+ dollars. I'm looking for something in the USA.
