I too have been having problems with sudden updates on the laptop. Sadly no kitties to cause problems. Know exactly what you have been through.
Guess it gets worse before it gets better. Phone update is great. But, suddenly couldn't get into my emails. One hour to fix that, in the middle of which, my television went out. (Re-downloaded program which controls the emails). Been troubleshooting the tv all morning and had decided that it was the channel changer, since rebooting several times, new batteries, etc. did not fix the problem. Decided to grab the channel changer and make the 25 mile trip to service provider, as I do not want their service people in my home right now! As I was leaving room, I realized there was no time showing on the set-top box. Looking closer I discovered the real problem. One of my two sweet kittens had kindly unplugged the unit for me. Yep, that's right, the simplest answer. Everybody is giving my their most innocent face. After all this I'm almost scared to touch my washing machine dials (the next task) or get in my car to go get lunch at the drive thru window.
If it were me, I'd run an anti-virus (online not currently installed) on that computer asap. If you can run one in "safe mode." A computer update should not create havoc with your Windows system like that--not even for a minute.
Oh my goodness, not a good way to start or end your day. Thank goodness all seems to be wel now.
