Wool Pressing Mat

Need some advice
I bought one from E bay and it arrived yesterday in a sealed cellophane packet.
When I opened it it smelt a bit.
After doing a test press run which works just fine the smell is worse just like a wet dog.
I have it outside airing at the moment.
Question is? Is this normal and does the smell go away. Or because it is wool it will always have a smell?
Should I spray it with something?

Try some "OdoBan" I use this with my cats or an old wet mop really helps take out odor , but it by the gal only takes a small amount spray and leave it outside to dry .

The smell should be similar to a 100% wool sweater when wet or damp. That actually is proof that it is wool. After a while it will only smell that way when you hit it with heat and steam. Enjoy because it does a great job.

Yes that is a lot like a wet overcoat smell.
I have a super sniffer drives hubby mad as he has no sense of smell.

This is normal. I never found it improved much, but it sure does the pressing job!

Give it a couple of days to dry thoroughly then seal in a Ziploc to avoid moth holes. It took the moths about 10 years to get to mine.

Thank you for your answer. I was just concerned that as I got it at a good price $18.00 Aust for 14 inch x 14 inch that I had bought a dud.
