I see someone mentioned prepayed card. That is what I always use when buying on internet. Only once someone tried to take money, but as there was no money it came up for me as debt, but as there was no money on the card, they could not take money from me
I have been wiped out by fraudster. I am still out $400 with paypal. Needless to say I am not using paypal unless I have to and then I do not log in. These folk are smarter than I am, although I did catch them in the act, I was helpless to stop it. I now have double security on my email and all my accounts. I also purchased lifelock. I will need these protections forever. I do recommend a pre-paid card as babash said. That is what I am using to prevent a complete wipe out again.
Get a pre paid credit card and load it with a reasonable amount of money that way if you want to purchase something from a company that does not use Paypal you have little to lose.
A few weeks ago I was getting several emails saying that ,I had been approved for some account ,from some place I had never heard of.I just deleted it unopened & classed it as spam. This went on for a few weeks ,sometimes there were over 10 emails a day,all were sent to the trash marked as spam. They have stopped now ,something called Rudolph Embroidery has started to send emails ,also something from MTN.Never heard of any of them & I haven't been on any new sites either.
I can actually block email that I don't want so it never shows up again. You probably can do that on your computer too. Took me a little time to figure out how to do it.
I also agree PayPal is the way to shop online these days. Lots of security and a way to safe guard your self against those fraudulent charges.
I only use PayPal because I can choose within that system how I want to pay for the purchase ( One of the 2 Credit Cards or direct from my bank account) Paypal will send an e-mail after you have authorized a purchase verifying it. I actually refuse to make a purchase if the option of PayPal is not available. I hate having my credit card info all over the internet. I also back out from a purchase if the company wants to keep the info unless I can get into my account and delete it again.
Years ago I made a small purchase from a company and having been a merchant myself I know the cost that is involved, so I paid directly from my checking account. Next time I made a large purchase planning to put in on my credit card and was stunned when it had come directly out my checking account. Merchant had saved my info. Now I rarely purchase from them and if I do I immediately remove the info. I want to be in control of my own finances. So far I have been lucky and had not had unauthorized charges on my cards.
One more thing to remember about Paypal. You have 2 resources to solve a dispute. First Paypal and 2 second the credit card I picked.
One word... Paypal...you don't have to put any credit card information on any site that takes it...
Knock on wood I have not had this problem for 3 years. I feel for you! I do have a few sites that save my card info, not sure how to stop that.
If you use Paypal, you don't have to record any credit card details on any site...
My paypal was hacked twice. these fraudsters are organized and effective. Over 110 million Americans have been defrauded.
I'm sorry this is happening to you, pennyhal2. You may have been hacked so change your personal Wi-Fi and computer passwords in addition to confirming that you are following these safety tips:
Always check that you using a secure site by confirming the address begins with https.
Don't allow your browser to store or remember the card number.
Review your accounts frequently.
Consider using an online payment system or mobile payment service.
Don't use a public Wi-Fi.
I received an email today stating that two charges (on a bank card that I don't have) had been denied and if I wanted to continue using the card I would need to click the supplied link to enter "all requested information." That one was deleted very quickly!
About this last paragraph. That is how PayPal had gotten a bad name years ago. Spammers would duplicate the look of the site and send out e-mails coning people to send all their personal info. Lots of them fell for it.
Thanks for the good tips! I remember that PayPal had been hacked once too, but is probably a more secure way to pay.
