Happy New Year. As soon as we had 15 minutes of dark, the fireworks started here in my neighborhood and across the lake. I remembered a New Year's Eve project I used to do in high school and college, polishing up all my shoes to step into the New Year with everything "renewed". Not up for shining all the shoes tonight and I mostly wear sneakers any how, but I've just finished my handbag, which is quite antique and worn, and it looks like it will make it another year now! It used to be my job (for pay!) to polish my Dad's Sunday shoes on Saturday evenings, so I spent some time recalling his life and our relationship, too. Clearly, not the party girl tonight...

Lovely to hear all about the things you used to do. Luckily fireworks are banned here where I am in SA.

They are banned in my neighborhood, but it doesn't help. Some cities in Alabama ban them, but not the state. States figured out if they ban them, the next state over gets the tax revenues.

What fun to hear the family traditions of you and Chris. I hope others share their traditions. We had a neighbor last night who gave the neighborhood a fireworks show. I was grateful he was very responsible and it was over around 10pm. Enjoy your renewed antique handbag. I'm sure it carries many a pleasant memory.

Great to read your family's tradition Betsey, it's lovely to reminisce about times gone past. Happy New Year to you.

P.S. I go to my front door open it up and let the New Year in, then I walk to my back door, open it and let the old year out!

That seems a very British thing to do, Chris. Happy New Year to your household.
