I've been familair with all the names except the last four. I suspect that there's a list of the types of fabric out there too. Every once and a while, I'll see a fabric with a name I don't know.
I find this quite interesting! I was amazed that I was familiar will all but the bottom four. Probably because I rarely use that style of fabric. This is like trying to remember all the names for apples!
The saying, we are never to old to learn, applies here for me. I do recognize some of the names like Tartan,Madras, Buffalo, but others like Black Watch, the Glens, P of W check and Tattersall I've not heard of.
Checks: We call checks anything with two colors that crossed which included gingham, checks, shepherd (can't honestly tell the difference here in shepherd or gingham) buffalo(just a bigger check-lol) and pin were all called checks.
Plaids: Plaids were plaid, anything with more than two colors that crisscrossed-the plaid, tartan, black watch(?), Madras,Glen,Price of Wales and Tattersall were all called plaids.
Houndstooth was houndstooth and Windowpane we call windowpane.
I'm not sure where the Grid fit in with us. I guess I kept things simple-lol
I do like your gift and wonder where your brother came across this.
And we all want one of each and in different colors for our stash.
My stash is ridiculous. I know for a certainty I am addicted. What makes it worse is my husband encourages me to buy more. For special days he tells me to order what fabric I want. Dange!
Goodness, I don't think we even have that many words in English for "love".
