After reading Graceandham long blackout woes,I have a suggestion. Buy a LED camping lanterns which have batteries. We keep them in the bedroom wardrobe. One lamp per person with spare batteries. We can then do some things which need light.

I agree, it is good to be prepared for power outages. Having heat and light is important. Other suggestions ae to have candles (with matches). Candles throw off heat, as well as light. You can even cook on candles covered with a clay pot. That's amazing to me. There are lots of ideas on YouTube to help us be prepared for emergencies. And yes, living in hurricane country, we have worked had to be prepared.

Thanks for the suggestion. My 94 year old neighbor across the street had two bright lanterns in her windows, though she was not there.

This is a great idea. We have a couple of portable lights that my husband uses when working in our attic which had no light, they have proved excellent on the odd occasion of a power cut. I am trying to remember the longest we have been without power and think it was 72 hours. Only the electric off so we could still cook - bottled gas and heat the house - solid fuel. Our very old landline phone (60 plus) worked and I visited a friend to charge my mobile. A big lorry had accidentally knocked the cable to our area down.

Abut 5 yrs ago we had one that lasted 26hrs.It was a very hot January ,in the high 30Cs.Husband had just come home from hospital.A tree had come down during a storm in another street & had blacked out the whole area ,we were the last to get the power on.Our short street was full of workman & vehicles trying to fix the transformer. As everyone came home from work they were asked when the power would be on.
