UPDATE: Oh both machines are sewing again! I am so happy!!! I went to YouTube ( my kids and grandkids will be so proud I remembered to-lol) I watched this lady and thought I think I can do that myself. Well I did what she said and got my dogs up. Put my plate and everything back on and went to sew but fabric wasn’t moving through. I guess I got nervous then and called my friends son. He is so smart when it comes to ANY tech stuff. He likes taking things apart and seeing how they work. Well he was eager, because he likes a challenge and never worked on a sewing machine before, so came right over. He took all the plastic off my machine so we could clean all the lint out. This is just a $400 sewing/embroidery machine from Walmart I’ve had about 10+ years and has never been serviced so fuzz was everywhere. We cleaned it all and he adjusted the dog like I had done until it was correct. Put everything back together and I sewed forward backward etc to make sure it would feed both ways. I almost hugged him!!! Then he did Nora’s adjustment with just taking the throat plate off. I bought it to her this morning when I came. I’ve been staying all week with the kids while my son-in-law works because my daughter drove the bus with the church youth to camp. Anyway, Nora’s eyes lit up when she saw her machine back. She is making something as I text. I told her she is doing really well, keeping her top stitching straight, even and close to the edge. Look her at her strap tab for a little pouch she made.

Needless to say we both are extremely happy.

‘Houston we have a problem’ to quote a line from a movie.
Have any of you had this problem on your regular sewing machine, where the feed dogs won’t raise up?
There is a switch on the back of my Brother that you should be able to raise the feed dogs for regular sewing or drop the feed dogs to do free motion quilting. Mine stay in the dropped position and will not raise.
So, I get Nora’s machine I bought new for her when she was about 3. I think we sewed one time on it and it’s been back in the box in her closet since. So when I unpacked it I’m trying to teach her threading and what each part is called. I switch her switch to show her how the feed dogs drop for quilting. Then I go to slide it back to raise the feed dogs and now her new machine won’t rise up!
Has anything like this happened to you? I could understand if mine would just be worn out but hers is brand new but 7 years old now.

I do hope she has a love of sewing. She did seem to enjoy herself. Thanks

Hurray! I'm so glad both machines are now in working order. Nora looks so focused on her projects. And what a sweet girl to think of her parents first. I know they are going to love their new phone holder and wrist pouch. Can you send your friend's son over to clean and oil my machines? I am nervous about turning them on since they have been sitting unused for the past 2 years.

These are what Nora made and guess who they are for? Not herself, her parents 🥰. The phone holder is for dad and the wrist pouch for mom. I had to take the picture with an empty phone cover. I have to bring it home with me for hubby to install a snap for us on moms pouch and I have some rings to attach the strap, at home. I am so proud of her! I asked if she needed or wanted a break and like me-lol- No, keep on sewing! I asked her if she likes to sew and Yes was her answer.

Several times this has happened to me and I was able to flip the switch and turn the handwheel, which brought the feed dogs back into position. I hope you have a simple fix. Let us know.

Nora’s was simple but he really got into mine. Info at update. Glad you were able to get yours fixed. I would have soon had machine withdrawals-lol

I really feel for you at the moment. My sewing machine will only sew backwards at the moment - virtually impossible to use. Also will not do any other stitch at all. Waiting to take it to be fixed.

Sarah that sounds a very challenging problem

Nora said we can send Damion to Africa after he leaves Karen’s in Florida-lol- I wonder what a service charge would be-lol-I told Nora you could turn you machine around😉
All joking aside- I do hope you can get it fixed and soon, too.

Nothing worked for me, but glad it works for you. All these machines have a little different tweak.

Toogie, I’m sure you probably tried this, but just in case you haven’t - after making sure the switch is moved all the way over to the left, turn the hand wheel one complete rotation to re-engage the feed dogs. If that doesn’t work, try unplugging, then move the needle to the highest position and try again (move the switch again and turn the hand wheel).

Did all that yes but now they’re running again. Thanks for trying.

I haven't had this issue, but then I don't free motion quilting either. I wonder if it has anything to do with being stored for so long and it needs to be oiled. I do know that if it happens to me, I would first panic and then be calling my dealer. And continue to panic. I hope there is someone else who can give you far more help than I can. Not to mention, it would be good to know the solution.
