Good day Cuties! I know you have seen these tops before the quilting, but I just had to show them again afterward. I especially like the Jets quilt. Both the Red/white and blue were quilted by Lynn, a fellow member of QOV and my sewing group. Lynn quilted the jets, called Aim High, with ‘air currents’ and really shows well on the dark navy ‘sky’. Lynn has a programmed long arm quilt machine. I love it! It is #49 for QOV. The other is from a book of Judy Martins. This is Stars & Stripes Forever and #50 for me for QOV to mark my 5 years (2019-2024) since joining.
The purple quilt set on point is Nora’s my granddaughter’s quilt that I just quilted myself. It’s the first quilt I have quilted since recovering from my broken wrist. Nora was 10 years old when she pieced this top. She just turned 11 this past Friday. I brought Nora with me Thursday to my sewing group for Show & Tell. Here she is with her quilt that day. All the ladies were so encouraging to her. One lady gave her a 20 strip Jelly Roll to encourage her to start a new quilt.
The Play Ball is a quilt I had pieced a while back. Rylan our great grandson wanted it so I quilted it after I finished Nora’s. I still have to make his label before he gets it. Maybe I will get that done today. Anyway, both Nora and Rylan’s were quilted by me in my regular free motion or meander style.
I almost forgot to tell you what happened. I was into my quilting of Play Ball when I came upon a square that had about a half inch slit or cut in it. I panicked so not knowing what to do at the time, I darned back and forth over the hole and kept quilting.
After I finished I laid the quilt out and my eye was drawn to the darning like a magnet. Then I had this idea. I would cut a circle of fabric like the square. I cut with my pinking shears so the circle would not ravel. Then I hand stitched about 1/4 inch from the outer edge and drew it up like you do a yo yo, over a piece of cardboard I had cut into a circle. I then pressed it flat as I could and slipped the cardboard out. That probably was the hardest part. I placed the circle of fabric over the hole AFTER I removed all the darning stitches. They showed on the back too so I didn’t want that. I then hand stitched with tiny stitches around the outer turned edge of the circle. When this was done I took it back to my quilting machine and reconnected the meander stitches. I was more pleased with this solution than the panicked darning I had done.( Pictures below) #7 with darning in neon green square above basketball- #8 hole with darning stitches removed #9 circle hand stitched on and meandered over #10 &11 finish after repair
I still have my machine set up to quilt my last top I finished, the Mexican Star. I would like to ruler quilt it but not confident I will be able to. I wore my wrist brace while quilting but still had to take breaks and use the heating pad on my wrist. I know if I start with the ruler, I will have to continue….
So here are the finishes. I hope you don’t mind re-visiting. I did try to group them all here, so as not to make more post, so may be photo overload-lol
Have a nice day my friends❤️Toogie
