Hi Cuties ! Here is Della’s Garden although the pattern is called Penny’s Garden. My husband said I could have made 3 Quilts of Valor as long as I have been on this one. (Sigh)

First the 3 corners with chevrons were supposed to be whole pieces of fabric Chevrons, which I didn’t have, so I made these out of half square triangles. A lot of 2.5 inch HST. Now I am the first to admit I’m not good at hand sewing. I think I pulled my thread too tight when I sewed the flowers on bc my quilt edge on that corner wanted to wave. So, I re-sewed the yo-yo flowers on and now it doesn’t wave and lies flat. I didn’t do the raw edge Applique on the green stems and leaves. I self lined the leaves, cut a slit in lining and turn RSO so I could just straight stitch on. The stems I pressed the short ends under, then sewed wrong sides together. When I pressed I ran a small wooden dowel inside and ironed my seam open, then ironed flat from the front side. (See photo) The name Della, was made using deco-bond and pressing onto fabric for placement. I sewed around each letter 3 times. I used a straight stitch first, then a small more open zigzag and thirdly I stitched with a wider but closer zigzag kinda like our embroidery machine does. I think that should be enough to keep it from fraying or coming off. (Photo shows ‘ l l a ‘ with the finished zigzag and the ‘ D e ‘ still has to be finished .) All the Applique was done before I meander quilted it. I added the yo-yo flowers after it was quilted. I hope the mom likes it…Have a great day-Toogie

So beautiful! I do hope it's appreciated for the piece of art it is.

Taylor and her mom, Cindy, came today and visited all afternoon with us. I had let Cindy know they could pick up Della's quilt whenever, so they came today. We really enjoyed their visit. Yesterday morning we got a call one of our brother-in-laws passed away, so their visit really helped us. As they were leaving, I reminded Taylor that when she has the baby this coming Friday (lol), for my birthday, to let us know!-lol

Lovely and very different, also very fiddley those flowers, leaves and in particular the stems must have tested your patience to the hilt. You must be glad you have finished this quilt.

Those stems bought back memories of the quilt I made for my daughter in-law, I used material from her wedding gown and the brides' maids, it was the very first quilt using silk fabric and vowed never again. The binding was also silk, and I had no end of trouble in the end I phoned my girlfriend, and she came over and helped me get it right, it was a nightmare. LOL

Well this is a bit different to your usual quilts and it seems to have kept you busy while creating it. Have you made it specifically for someone or not?

Yes our niece Cindy is a retired school teacher and she’s getting her first grandchild. Her daughter is a pharmacist and is expecting Della on the 24th. So yes, it is for Della our great-great niece.
