When making machine emb doilies do you use embroidery thread or cotton thread. I have a pattern for a pineapple one. I'd like it to look close to the hand crochet that my mother use to make.

My dealer warned me, I could use serger thread BUT it had to be best quality. The cheaper ones are made of shorter cotton fibres and they could cause machine problems due to the small particles they shed. I'm looking forward to your finished project!

I may try the serger, however, I don't know the quality of what I have on hand so I may purchase a new spool since it has been around for a good while. Thanks for the information. I won't get started this week but it's the next thing on my list.

Shirlene is right. In fact you can use any type of thread, it is just a matter of experimenting and seeing which look you like best.I would suggest you go to your supplier and see what threads they have available and in what thicknesses.Cotton threads are fine, especially for the hand crocheted look.It does not matter if it is a FSL design. You should still be able to use these. Ultimately it will depend on your machine, bur I have seen a doily stitched out in thicker type cotton thread on a Janome and it looked like the "real" thing.

Thank you. I will have to experiment. Maybe do one section in a couple of threads to see what I like.

Carolyn, I have used some serger thread that is the same color as the crochet floss that everyone used back when - I love the way that it stitches out the doilies. You have to clean your machine because of the little bit that comes out - when it stitches - some machines may not be able to handle it - some can - you can only try it and see. Post your project - when you are finished. I have one that I plan on posting now - take a look and you will see how great minds think alike. Hehehe!

Thank you for the information. Since I checked the projects first today I have already seen you doilies. They are gorgeous. They have the appearance of the hand crochet. It may be a while before I start it but that is next on my list to try. This week will be a busy one.

I do have serger thread so I may try that.

Oh good - please try it - you will like the effect. But clean your bobbin casing - often! Hehehe!

I haven't had much luck with the cotton. My machine doesn't pull it very well. Good Luck

If U r talking FSL Clawton u will need to use embroidery thread. I don't believe anything else will do as well. *4U
