But I haven't a clue about rayon... anyone have any good suggestions???? I've never used rayon, and frankly have been scared in the past... how does it hold up in FSL too?

Yes, why not.I have also used these with Lana Madeira, which is a wool embroidery thread.

I started out embroidery in 1993 with Madeira rayon, did not even know polyester existed till I got to an embroidery studio cum wholesale supplier of Marathon polyester, who is willing to sell to embroiderers too, at very low prices. So apart from the Madeira 6-drawer chest (over 400 1000m spolls) I now have some 400 1000m cones of polyester and use them happily together in the same design. No problems.

So when does it arrive at your house?

mops by mops 06 Aug 2008

I recently got one from an ex-colleague who moved house and wanted to get rid of it. Did not want money, so I got it for shortening curtains. Mine is a 1928 Singer in a less elaborate case. My mum gave hers away and I always wanted one..

marymoore by marymoore 06 Aug 2008

i still need to call to see if they still have it oh goodness i hope so

Since I am so new to embroidering and I haven't yet acquired a "stash" (not like my yarn collection yet) Please email me and let me know how much you are charging for the thread and the colors available and how many yds are on a spool! TYVM * (email in profile)

I've been using Sulky rayon for years and never had any problems with it either in embroidering or washing.

Excellent question. I have used the 2 together. I like rayon better because of the shine and I don't notice fading. It washes up fine for me. *4U

I mix rayon and poly all the time and even add metallic too. Remember on sewing machines when they told you to always use the same thread in the bobbin as top thread. Who does that any more.

Katy, thank you! *4U2

misscharlie by misscharlie 05 Aug 2008

So funny you should mention the bobbin thread, the last time I sewed it was on my Mom's cast iron singer and that is what you did with the bobbins. I was making something and made a bobbin with the upper thread and my machine thru a fit lol.

I'm not an expert at FSL, but all my FSL designs have been in rayon because I like the shine on the thread.

I mix poly and rayon all the time. Have used both (not together) for FSL with great results.
I actually did two designs yesterday using both.

I use rayon all the time. I have not had a problem doing FSL with it. My dealer told me that rayon does not hold up well with bleach but poly does. So if you don't see that there will be a need to bleach in the future what's the harm.

Carolyn, thanks! So far it just has to do with the colorfastness, huh?

I always use Rayon for my FSL, it has a higher shine and FSL doesn't need to be laundered often so i figure Rayon is better. I also 'intend' to use Rayon for all my picture type embroidery and any of my own clothes as I like the shine, it stitches out so beautifully. It is not recommended for anything requiring lots of laundering, ie: kids clothes, household articles: sheets & pillow slips; table linens; towells; etc. But it is ideal for evening gowns; handbags; purses, curtains; special occasion table linen;(ie. Christmas) etc. I use the guideline, if it requires frequent laundering do not use Rayon. Others with more experience may be able to tell you more. hugs n roses, M

You're welcome Shirlene, I'm surprised you don't already use it, being the FSL Queen. <VBG>

of course you can mix them. Poly isn't as shiney (especially in the past) as rayon. Don't bleach rayon. It will fade. It will not run if it is quality brand. I have only done limited FSL, but I did it in Rayon cause I LIKE SHINEY OBJECTS!!!! hahaha;)

Jerrilyn, thanks - we appreciate your imput. I guess the biggest thing to remember is not to bleach it. Hehehe!

Hello ladies,
I have been told not to mix the two as well. But then I think it depends what item you are embroidering on. I think polyester is a stronger quality and can be washed endless times. Rayon is not colour fast, at least not what I get here. I have been using both together on aprons for bottles, bags for spumante bags, toilet paper sachets, items that don't get washed; and I never had any problems while embroidering.
Flowers and hugs,
Mary, Melbourne

Mary, thanks - so it has more to do with the color fastness - then? Hmmmmmm!

From what I have been told, yes.
Good luck,

I believe from what Teri told me - it is a site for selling things - put it in google and do a search - see what you get. LOL

coco128 by coco128 05 Aug 2008

It's a great place .. to buy, to sell, to find employment, for so many things. I check it weekly.

misscharlie by misscharlie 05 Aug 2008

I find great deals on Craig's List. Got my ped basic for $20 and my PE Deisign 6 for $40 the only pain is searching all of the cities to see what's out there.

simplyrosie by simplyrosie 05 Aug 2008

OH GOSH!!! You'd love CL Mary... I'm addicted, that's for sure. I have gotten soooo many things on that site. Everything from tvs to a new tempurpedic calif. king bed... it's endless. And I have sold a bunch of stuff on there...

YES, thanks to Teri's eagle eye for a good buy - the two of us were able to get this great deal - but as she said - we don't know much about rayon and I for one need to know about the FSL part. Come on - give us the scoop - OK?

Shirlene, that's all I use .. Robison Anton rayon thread - even for FSL - don't see why you can't mix - I don't think one has anything to do with the other - *4u
