I wish I was a neighbor. I love tomatoes. They are so expensive now. We have to pay about $2 a tomato, so DH says. Anyway, he won't buy them. I won't go look while we are shopping because I'll just... [sniff] But thanks for the pictures it helps me remember what they look like. lol You give me the idea of planting some. I've never grown anything, but it just might be time to learn. I think you can teach an old dog new tricks! *4u

I also refuse to buy the grocery store tomato, especially the ones in the winter that are grown in hot houses. To expensive and no taste to them. You certainly can grow them in a pot. The bushy patio or salad tomato will work well. Plant Marigolds around it if space permits. Fertilize every 10 days with Miracle Gro. You will have your own tomatoes.

Tomato Supreem.... To every 5 tomatoes add 2 to 3 onions and A table spoon and a 1/4 of sugar put in pot and bring to boil while that is coming to boil- fry some bacon cut into bite size bits and then add that to tomatoes with some pepper. Simmer till all is combined taste as you go if acidy add a little mor sugar but don't think you will have to ...this is great on toast. any time of day..better for breakfast. I can tase it now I'm going to have to make some now...Tomatoes should all be mushy. play around with it and you will discover the taste i am tasting now. once cooked you can freeze it.

lucky you! I tried to grow tomatoes for the first time this year, my plants grew big, then one morning all my leaves were gone! There were 5 HUGE fat worms on each of my plant that ate my plants... so I being a little angry pulled them up and threw them in the compost pile!!! so much for learning patience this summer and this morning I paid way tooo much for tomatoes. I wish I would have known, we actually were right near you when we went on vacation! We went from Missouri to mississippi to florida back to missouri!! I make a zuchini-tomato mexican lasagna! It is tooo die for! Try going to www.recipe.com they have many ideas there! good luck!

I have had those worms before. They can strip a plant clean in one day. I pull them off and step on them and sprinkle plants with seven dust. Thanks for the web site. I'll check. I also like My Recipes.com. That one is Southern Living.

first, fried green tomatoes, slice your tomatoes (usually green but ripe works) season some flour with salt pepper, dip your tomatoes and fry in a little bacon grease. That's the way my grandmom used to do, you can use corn meal instead if you prefer, bread crumbs don't really work well. Second can those babies, easy as pie, wash and dump em in a big pot of boiling water to blance, peel off the skins (and this is how we did it in the country) squeeze em with your hand into a big bowl and then put into canning jars with a heaping spoon of salt. Put on the lids and place in a hot bath of boiling water for aprx 10-15 min, carefully put on the counter to cool, as they cool you'll hear to tops 'pop'. That way you know you've got a good seal. Then open em when needed and make your salsa, sauce, topping, pizza, etc. Have fun. Wish I was there....

Oh! Karen I did this in 1973. Went out and bought everything to can, jars, lids, funnel and water bath caner. Canned straight for 2 or 3 days. I was so proud of my self. I made my usual trip to grocery store and their special was 4 cans of tomatoes for a dollar. I came home and cried. That was my first and last attempt to home can. I do freeze things now and then, but have rather limited freezer space. Thanks for the green tomato recipe.

Make a tomato and cucumber salad. Cut up cucumbers, tomatoes and onion. Mix together with a mayo or salad dressing. I make a dressing of salad dressing, vinegar, sugar and milk. Sorry I don't know the amounts since I never measure it. Just watched my mom years ago.

I'm jealous. I have 10 tomatoe plants, all loaded with tomatoes and not one of them has started to turn red. We have had a bad year up here for vegetables. Out of all my cucumber plants I managed to get a whole 2 and neither were edible. This year I will have an abundance of choke cherry jam and beet salad instead. Can't have it all but it sure would be nice.

Tomatoes are funny... they like to be in very acidic soil (so add your used coffee grounds or hit Starbuck's for a load of theirs). Also, if it's too cold or too hot, they won't turn red. What temp has it been up there in Canada?

katydid by katydid 18 Aug 2008

Funny, you mention coffee grounds. I read several years ago about adding them to soil, but I thought the idea was to break up the Georgia red clay soil. You know the biggest and healthiest plants were where I put the used coffee grounds. Maybe we are on to something!!!!!

Another great thing is to add mushroom compost. We have 2 mushroom farms where I live and you can haul as much as you'd like for free. :o) My garden looks like it's on steroids from all the compost it gets fed. lol

Bikermom posted recipe. Best made from green tomatoes just before they turn red. If you are reluctant to use bacon grease, use veg. oil but you will loose some flavor. Use lots of salt and pepper. I also like a little green pepper sauce on top. Enjoy!!!

My sister makes a delicious "salad" with tomatoes. After living in Italy for so many years, I am sure it is something she got from over there. She cuts tomatoes into cubes, sprinkles with oregano, adds cubes of mozzarella cheese, then mixes olive oil and balsamic vinegar - really delicious with crusty bread. I could make a meal out of just that. Those look yummy. Good for you.!

For really big ones I make a "stuffed pot" I take huge tomatoes and core them, green peppers core them and sometimes an eggplant. Mix up what you like in stuffed peppers stuff the vegies, and put into an 8 QT dutch oven and cook for 3-4 hours.

simplyrosie by simplyrosie 15 Aug 2008

:-) Well, another idea is to cut them up with some cucumbers (I use mediterranean), some feta cheese, purple onion, some mint, kosher salt and olive oil... Over in Israel, salads like this are eaten for breakfast. ;-) very good to eat!

If you make chili or stew, and have a freezer. Take good unblemished tomatoes and wash and dry and lay them in the freezer. When froze place in a box. When ready to use take out and place on a plate and wait a few minutes and the skin will slip right off. Put in your saucepan and turn heat on low and simmer. Then add the rest of ingredients. You have a fresh tomato flavored pot of chili or stew.

1. Tomatoes
2. Onions as much as you like
3. Garlic
4. salt pepper to taste
5. olive oil
6. chicken brests
In a LARGE uncovered frying pan cook the tomatoes, onion, and garlic in olive oil. Cook until all the juices are reduced. Add chicken breasts, cover for 1 hourlow temp. About every 15 minutes "stir" it so the breasts get coated in the tomatoes. OR you can place the breasts in a baking dish and pour the tomatoes over and bake 350 for about an hour depending on how many breasts. Salt and pepper before serving. Serve with dill rice. You really should start canning it's a simple process and so worth it. Another idea how far are you from Wisconsin???

Where do you live? What else do you grow? Can I be your neighbor? Your tomatoes are beautiful. I would stand in the garden as a child and eat tomatoes whole. Now I am very allergic to them and miss them so much. My mother would steam tomatoes with yellow squach, top with melted butter, salt, pepper to taste and then parmasian cheese. Okay now I'm hungry.

Yummy! Our 27 yr old had never had yellow tomatoes until this year...and now loves them. I guess we had just always had red ones before! I do freeze a few to use in chili & soup during the winter. Easiest thing to do! Just drop in boiling water for a couple mins, take out and the skins slip right off! Cut off the stem end,put in a freezer bag either cut up or as is and they sure come in handy during the winter!
