I tried it a long time ago, after getting the software, with a photo of a fire truck but did not work well so I haven't done anything with it since. After seeing so many great designs created by many of the cute family I thought I might give it another try. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I briefly remember someone on the site having 4D but I think it was the professional version. Is anyone using the 4D Extra?

I use Janome Digitizer Pro, so I don't know about the 4D, but I just wanted to encourage you to keep poking away at it. There is a learning curve to digitizing, and for a while it seems like all greek, then suddenly the light bulb comes on, and ta da!! You have designs!! Do online tutorials, or whatever you need. And just remember, you can't hurt the program or your computer. The worst that can happen is you erase it & start over, & you've spent some time learning what NOT to do, hee hee hee. Best of luck, keep at it!! Marji

clawton, I use 4D Pro, which is the same as your 4D Extra plus more - check my profile for my e-mail address. I'll be glad to help you if I can!

I will keep you in mind. I have already marked this posting so I can get back to it easily. I have some project I must finish but then I want to try it again if I can get a simple design I like.

If you intend to manually digitise you can use any picture that you can see clearly as you are only using it like when you 'trace' over a picture.
If it is a very small picture and you need to enlarge it to see, it would then be preferable to be a vector image (.wmf) or it could become so pixelated that you can't see the edges/details clearly.
Pixelated is when you see the picture becoming like a lot of little boxes, you've probably seen pictures like this many times.
If you are going to use the "Auto-Digitising" then in most cases you would also probably need .WMF clips as being vector images, (I believe) it is what most digitising programs recognise/require for auto-digitising.
Hope this helps. hugs n roses, Meganne

I can use jpg in PE Design, but it takes more cleaning up..

meganne by meganne 05 Sep 2008

The picture or the design?
I always use Jpegs and rarely have to touch up the pictures before I digitise them, only because i think that a design is only an interpretation of the picture, it doesn't have to be identical, unless it is specifically requested for an order. This of course only applies if you are digitising manually, but then I did already cover that, didn't i?
Each program does things differently so I can't speak for PE Design. The two programs I have both do the same things but are totally different in their approach, one is complicated, one is easy.
But after using the easy one, it helps in understanding the difficult one better. LOL! Practice and study makes perfect. hugs n roses, Meganne

I agree with Meganne about the images. I never bother to retouch any image because I also manually digitize.

Thank you very much. I have seen reminders about the freebies at clipartopolis and wonder which version I should use. Sounds like wmf or jpeg would be best. I think I downloaded one in jpeg.

I have just started digitizing and I use .wmf I like it because I can isolate the portions of the design I want to work with. I can then work in layers. It let's me control the order of the design. I'm sure there is probably an easier way, but as I said, I am just a beginner and am learning my software as well! I use PE Design, so I can't help you with any software specifics. I need help myself... Oh, wait, I forgot. It's just me in general who needs the help! Or so I have been told...

Flat vectors work best. Try clipart from clipartopolis and designstitch. But if you manually digitize, it does not matter much. I have digitized from photos as well as clipart.
I don't know about 4D, though. I use Janome Digitizer Pro.
Any format your digitizer takes should be fine, whether it is jpg, wmf or bmp

How do you know they are flat vectors? I wanted to start collecting some simple designs.I downloaded the free bears the other day from clipartopolis but they look a bit difficult to start with! Thanks for your help. I do want to try again after I finish some projects. Maybe we will have lots of snow this year and I'll be stuck inside with this challenge!
