When I was in middle school they were one of the projects we made in "Home Economics". When I started teaching they were still one of the quick projects that were made. Children really liked them. I had mine for years after. The socks came in grey and brown. They were really consider men' work socks at the time. We usually used the brown ones. IT IS REALLY JUST A STUFF TOY. It was affordable for the times and taught children how to hand sew and hand embroidery
Sock monkeys have been around for a LONG time. My 39 yr old daughter had 2 made by an aunt, which she still has. Those socks were actually work men's socks. There is a book I've seen SOMEWHERE with instructions to make other animals from the socks. I guess it's more of a "remember when" thing for some people to embroider them on something! Carol Duvall on the DIY channel is the "sock monkey queen" but I don't know why! Maybe because her show was one of the first to tell how to do them? ANYWAY, they are a safe, washable toy..no recalls on these!
quite amazing,I see you can buy the socks with the red heal in. Maybe I will make one for my GD's...we'll see
Monkeys are not my favorite thing either. Now a sock kitty would be ok, hee hee hee. Don't know why anyone would want to embroider one, but hey, we're all different, and that's what makes the world so absolutely wonderful!! Celebrate our differences, have fun, but don't give me any sock monkeys, hee hee hee. Love y'all, Marji
I remeber seeing Carol Duvall having a lady that made a reindeer from the "sock" and I think and allegator tooo :)
Personally I think they are ugly ~ sorry if I offended anyone.xoxox *
It is a stuffed monkey made from a pair of grey & red socks. See the red on the monkey? That is the heel, I'm sure you can find the pattern IF you really want to make one by googleing it. :)
yep googled: and there it was, well I never...I know, I don't get out much Hehehe....
