i was not allowed to trick or my granny would of taken care of me ll we do not get any kids at my house at all so we usually go to churches in the area they always have games and celebrate different ways they give ut nice goodie bags for the kids paint faces and yes praise the lord
I knew if I tricked someone in OUR neighborhood when I was young what my next years halloween costume would be...ME, SKINLESS. We still have 100 or so children show up in our neighborhood. My grands come here and are only allowed to go to the houses of people I know, but they get to get all of our candy they want(or what they can get past their moms!)
Well, it is trick OR treat, as in you will get a trick if we don't get a treat. So if no candy is forthcoming, you open yourself up to tricks being played on you. I would hate to see what those tricks would be nowadays. We have the same sort of 'understood' thing here about the porchlight. When we run out of candy we also turn out the light.
When we were little we lived in a city (Seattle). We didn't "trick" anyone. But we sure were able to cover alot of streets and came home with quite a haul of candy. Can't imagine letting little ones go knocking at the door of strangers homes now. It has gotten so that alot of smaller towns around here will have something going on at the fire station or a public place for a candy handout, rather than have the children going from door to door.
When a kid we went Trick or Treating but were't allow to trick. Kid would go door to door with bags in hopes of getting candy. Out kids did the same thing when they were young. One year we had over 100 kids come to the door! Now where we are we don't get anyone. We're a bit off of main streets and etc. I stopped buying candy years ago. In our area they more or less have a rule that if the front porch is on you may go there for a treat. If no light is on you are not suppose to bother them. However, when living in town I was afriad not to participate. Anyway, it was fun seeing the kids all dressed up!
LOL Ive been reading some of the other comments, We did a few harmless things as kids, putting lawn furniture up n a tree WWAAAAy ABOVE THEIR HEADS. Firewood on the back step so when the door was opened it rolled all the way down. Harmless pranks, we lived n the country & houses were few & far between. We rode our bikes & covered about a 5 mile loop of road, probably less than 10 houses on that loop. *4U
We were not allowed to 'trick', I suspect I would not be alive today if I had, hee hee hee. But I know the high school 'bad boys' used to soap house & car windows, and for really grumpy people, used to string rolls of TP in their trees! Also smash pumpkins. This was all when I was a kid, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, hee hee hee. I'd really fear to think what kids would do today. Probably bomb your house. Better stock up on candy! Marji
Similar to blhamblen, when I was a kid if we knocked on someone's door and they were home and did not answer to give us a treat - we would just move something as the "trick" for not getting candy/treat. Like move a chair off the porch to the side of the house. If our knock was answered but no candy and we were given an explaination then we did not "trick" them.
Back in my day....YEARS ago...we used to soap windows of those who didn't give "treats" ie CANDY :) :)
That's when they have to do a trick in order to get the treat. You know, like stand on one finger. LOL
