This reminds me of the creative thinking excersises: name 20 uses for a paperclip, that sort of thing. But you got quite a few useful suggestions. I got some new ideas here as well. I have bags ful of the oldfashioned spools, wooden and plastic - I used to buy 200m spools when I first started machine embroidery. Now even the 1000m cones are gone in a jiffy once I got hooked on FSL. So I have a bag full of those as well.

I don't know what kind of spools you use. but some types make good funnels for filling smaller projects and they are great to wind hand embroidery thread on or for colour change yarn bobbins for knitting smaller projects. or glue end to end till you have enough height for garden stake to hold christmas lights or just use one and glue upside down onto a dowel stake and use the clip end to hold christmas lights, glue one to a block of wood and use for pencil holders for favorite penor pencil. want any more!!!!

Check with the local high school art department. Our school has a project the design using throw away items.

Maybe now that I am sewing more, I may get more empty spools, but I think that this is the first time I have ever used up the thread on one of my spools!

It's always fun to get new ideas though, isn't it?

Put it halfway (or a bit deeper) in the soil next to your potplants, large side to the top. It makes watering the plants easier and the water reaches the roots faster.

Hmm, now just to remember to water the plants in the first place!

I think you should stitch some FSL angel wings, glue a wooden ball face to the top and make an ornament of them.

That's sounds like it might be pretty cute. I'll have to use at least one of them to try it out. I have a feeling I am going to have a few more of these before I am finished.

Use an old shoe string and let little ones learn how to "thread" the cones on the string....Not as much fun as the old wooden cones, but still a good toy for a while.;)

That's a pretty good idea, too. My 4yo would really get a kick out of it. My 1yo would rather roll it around though. I guess it makes a good toy for either one of them. Isn't it always the way? You buy a new toy and they are happier with the box it came in! ;)
