Barb, this is a very good question and I do believe that it depends on the lace that you are stitching - but for me I generally use a #14 with most of the FSL that I stitch out - so far it works for me - but please don't put me on a pedestal - I might fall off - I just like to stitch good FSL designs. You have had great success with your FSL - I am sure that you have a size needle that you use more often than not - do you not? Hehehe! We all learn what works for us or what we have been taught and it is very hard to break that mold - once it is set - Hehehe!
thank you for asking this.... great question.... I am however curious to see shirlene"s answer she is the queen of fsl! flowers for you!

I use a 75/11 sharp most of the time on FSL that is really lacy. If it's actually a filled design that's freestanding I might go up as high as a 90/14 if the stitching is dense. I have not done any FSL with metallic thread yet. Wait for Shirlene's answer.. she's the FSL Master around here.

Well barb u have some excellent answers, hAVE USED 75/11 & they worked well 4 me. I really think it would depend on the thread, If u use serger thread U might want to try another needle size if it doesn't seem to b looking right to you * Since Sherlene does so much FSL why not ask her about it .

I use 11/75 mostly with the exception for when I use metallic threads
I haven't had time to start on FSL, but plan to. On everything else, I use an 11 or a 10. I tried 14 and had trouble with thread breaking a lot. Don't seem to have that with 11. **
I use 75/11 for my Brother machine , but I did buy a pack of 14's so I can try them in the future.*
