I just learned about the blackeyed peas today.
I was told that you have to eat blackeyed peas on
New Year's Day for good luck.
I had 3 peas....just wanted to taste them and I was told that all I really needed was one.
Even though I live in the Midwest I think I will follow the tradition....I think that's pretty neat.

Have a great day!

I guess the pork equals the ham and the sauerkraut equals the cabbage. The green beans and black eyed peas don't match too closely though...

Since we weren't home for Christmas and missed out having the Turkey left overs, I am doing a small Turkey today with the usual mashed potatoes, peas, turnip and carrots, cranberry and the stuffing of course...we are freezing cold so need a good hot meal...Happy New Year all...

Ann, I sure have had those things in the past - I had no idea that they were southern foods - but then - I guess my Mother's family did come from Kansas and around there. Hehehe!

Got those peas soaking right now!! Left over ham, cornbread! That "green" for money next year is mainly salad for my family...but I have the cabbage slaw for me! My mom used to always have turnip greens! I'm in East Tenn.

Yep, got to soak those peas and cook them slow, ham is good, and the cornbread, cabbage of any type. Your a southern gal for sure. haha have a great day.

mariahail by mariahail 01 Jan 2009

You will not have to soak any beans, all you have to do is put them in the microwave oven with plenty of water for about 15 minutes, while you boil the water, then out of the microwave and into the pot, they will be ready real quick.

The last couple of years, I have cooked fresh black eyed peas( they come in a little round container in the produce dept. of grocery store). They are really good and only take 20 to 25 minutes to cook. Also, I buy the collard greens that come pre washed and chopped in the plastic bags. I hate washing collard greens, what a mess. Love the bags!!! We are still eating the Honey Baked Ham from Christmas. When I get down to the last few pieces, I freeze them and use to season collard and turnip greens for later. First thing you know, we will be talking about cornbread again!!!

We HAD to soak them! Took that time to take off to the fabric store!!

We have what both of you have. A little ham, and of course the black eyed peas for luck and the cabbage for money (to be had in the coming year). At least we hope!

Where are you from pafhen? I'm from Texas...(where the state flag can legally fly at the same height as the American flag!) Can you tell I'm proud of my state?
