I do not know where I have been.........but I did not know that this was going on.
Hi, all, I've had snow in the dish for a few days, so I've been off line. If you go back to Soi's (ssarner) original post, you will find links to what this law is about. It isn't about home crafters, craft shows, etc. PER SE, but about testing for lead and other harmful substances in toys and clothing sold for children under 12 years old. So if you make baby bibs, etc, it WILL affect you, if you make purses, adult T & sweatshirts, etc. it WON'T affect you. Please go to kharriman's link below to read the article, and to ssarner's post and read all the articles about this law to inform yourselves of exactly what it's about. And while you're praying, you might also contact your congress people and squawk really really loud, that's where the change will have to take place. "All that is required for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing." Best of luck, Marji
Here is the link for guidelines for "resellers", like thrift stores, childresn's used clothing stores, etc.

I do make baby bibs from scratch. But the only thing on them that they might worry about is the snap. It's easily fixable with velcro. But I can't afford to have the test done to prove that it is lead free.
guess I have missed something along the way. This is a nation wide thing or state by state? All the arts and craft shows around here (really big ones to that draw ALOT OF MONEY) won't be able to sell? Hmmm, Wonder about Bikers Blues and BBQ? 100% of entry fees, and a pesentage of sales goes to charities! With over 300,000 people a year, thats alot of money. In our poor rural area re sale stores thrive. A wool blazer for $4.00 or prom dress for $50.
Like I said I missed something.
Alot of it don't make sense to me either.
I do craft fairs too. I know a couple of people that have shops. That is their main income. It's gonna wipe em' out.
This doesn't affect me in the UK but I hope you find a solution to this. This hasn't been though throught properly. Big business will be able to stand this better, but the small businesses will go to the wall. Jo
The local news has been covering this pretty hard this week. It is really going to affect everyone who sells anything....Just think of all the second hand stores that sell great items, they are really going to go through hard times. Let's pray that they amend this law from it's current form. Some common sense in this matter is needed to make it rational for everyone.
My local children's resale store is dumping all of their toys that won't pass but they are not sure about what to do with home made clothes. They said the law is in "flux" and I should wait it out. Meanwhile I shouldn't give them anything with metal buttons. So...I'm still confused.
Great! Just when I was thinking about selling my stuff.

Same here. I have little girl & boy fleece jackets to finish. Now I wonder if I should even bother. It's so disheartening. I feel bad because Meganne spent all her time on all those beautiful designs for the jacket. & now I might not get to put them up for sale. :(
What are they going to take away from us next?????????????
Gripes my bottom!!!!!
Kharriman, the law has already passed, and is to go into effect Feb 10. Consumer Protection Safety Admin is only charged with implementing the law, not making it. They are trying to figure out how to go about this now. Since it is already a law, the only thing that can be done is for Congress to amend it. Everyone should still be contacting thier congress people and representatives to bug them about this, and get hearings on it. Best of luck, Marji
This is all I have found so far.
Americans' opposition to the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) is growing fast, with a class-action law suit pending, and lawmakers asking for an urgent hearing in last-ditch attempts to save millions of microbusinesses from bankruptcy.
The new Act, which goes into effect from February 10, is very wide-ranging, requiring expensive lead-testing of imported and domestic products which many people would not immediately think of as toys, such as the 24-inch BMX-bikes used at the Beijing Olympics, hundreds of millions of children's books, tons of teaching materials for schools, tribal costumes sold at Native-American Trust lands... the protests are growing louder as people are discovering an increasing number of US-made goods which will requiring costly testing under this new law from February 10.
Plans are also afoot to launch a class action law suit against the CPSC.
