Has anyone cross stitched on a towel? The towel I want to use is a low pile (small loops) and the pattern I want to do is cross stitch. Any special tips when doing cross stitch on a towel?

I did, ans did it the same way as normal designs. But used solvable stuff on top of the towel. But I always use that for towels. Good luck!

I HAVE DONE CROSS STITCHES ON A TOWEL BUT BEFORE YOU HAVE A GOOD RESULT YOU HAVE TO GO 3 OR 4 TIMES OVER THE SAME COLOR WITH HOLES IN THE TOWEL AS A RESULT,CROSS STITCHES ARE NOT SO GOOD FOR A BATH TOWEL

Hello dkjack, I did a towel with Xstitch. See link below. I did it the same way as any other design on towels and I think it turned out well. Good luck with yours.

Thanks. I checked yours out and it looks lovely. Gives me encouragement. I think I'll use the largest cross stitch (14") and I think it will help. My sample was in the 18" and that is why I got nervous.

I read some where that you must stitch the design more than once to get the affect on towels if you doing X stitch.
I have not yet tested it though - good luck

I thought about that. I think I'll try the larger pattern on a ruined towel I already messed up at Christmas. Plenty of room to do samples on. I stashed it and forgot about it after I re-stitched a new towel. Might as well get some use out of it. :)

Deborah, sorry, I haven't done x-stitch on towels, and I think the stitches may be too small, not sure. Is the design listed as 14, 16 or 18? That might make a difference to the finished look on a towel. But just hang-in there as someone else will possibly know.

If not and you want to try it you could embroider on an old towel/washer first. And just think, if you do use your new towel and it doesn't look right - you have an embroidered cloth for doing the dusting etc, haha. Hugs and flowers for you sweetie, and if you do x-stitch the towel, I'd be interested to know how it went.

hahaha! Who has time to dust! Just kidding, I do dust. I have a towel I ruined at Christmas and had to re-do. Think I'll use part of it test. Not good for anything else. Thanks.

Good question,i keep a stash of face washers thick and thin to test designs. This way you can see the colours and stiching. These make good gifts for friends, school fates ect. I have found the thickness of the towels indicate the result.

When sewing on any terry you want to use solvy on the top (or some kind of water solvable stabilizer I use it on both sides of the towel or you can use a tear a way on the bottom

Good Luck

Thank you. I do use WSS on top and tear-a-way underneath.

I have not done cross stitch on a towel but when I have sewed on a towel I put the disolvable stuff under and over the pile before embroidering the design. No doubt someone will be along who has done cross stitch. Happy sewing

Yes I do use WSS but I did a test stitch out and the "Xs" are sooooooooooo small I am afraid they would be lost in the towel.
