I use heavy weight Solvy WSS. I only need one layer of it to do most things! You can get it at JoAnns fabric stores. The brand Vilene is like fabric as lbrow mentioned and works well also but have not tried only one layer with it.

welcome to the world of embroidery machines now like all things new you have to learn the jargone
I would imagine that what you are talking about is free standing lace designs or FSL these are actually sewn out by your machine abd yes it does look like lace, so how to strat lets learn another new set of words - Water Soluble Film or WSF this is a plastic type film that looks like saran wrap or thin plastic but there the apearance ends as this film actually disolves when placed into water.
You select your FSL design and then hoop up with WSF for FSL you need both the top and bottom threads to match in color as they show both sides. sew out the design. remove the hoop from the machine and then simply pull the WSF away from the stitching and you will have left your design.
so how does it work
your machine will begin to sew back wards and forwards across the hoop and then once its completed the size in that direction it ghanges to go across the threads allready laid down then it goes diagonally . this takes time but once it has lad down the stitches for the backing it witl then start on the maind design be it a flower or a fairy or even a FSL cross. it is at this point that you can actually start to experiment by changeing the colores of the threads again for both top and bottom to give even more definition to the design,,
take a look at some of the Free Stnding Lace designs that have been created by members and download one in your machines format.
you can also make lace borders and even bowls and ornaments in this manner. I would suggest downloading your own initial and makeing that as it wil not take too long and you can then attach it to your keys and show all your friends how clever you are .
I do hope this will help you to understand things,,Eggyannie in the UK
i have left you a flower to start yor own garden of friends with

Welcome dcordell to cute. No material is needed for lace. U use WSS(water soluble stabilizer n your hoop, I prefer the kind that looks like fabric(not the clear plastic kind. some use 2 pieces of wss, some only one. After the lace is finished embroidering you place n some warm water & the WSS melts, leaving the lace. I usually lay on thick towel to dry. Careful the lace is really addictive. *4U

thank you >>> cant wait to go to the store to get some and try this >>>>

eggyannie by eggyannie 06 Feb 2009

many of us use water soluble laundry bags check out E bay for them as they are so much cheaper purchased this way. its exactly the same thing b ut made into a very large laundry bag simply fold into three lengthways and slit the side seams to give yourself three long lenghts of WSF roll it around a tube and store in a zip lock plastic bag away from the damp
