This is so Bizzar!!! Last night I was talking to a friend on the phone and her husband asked her to ask me if I have backed up my files....well here I am this morning and all the questions I had about how to do, are here...how SPOOKY is that!!!
I use to do a lot of saving on cd's and since I bought my embroidery machine i have been using usb sticks....but watch out Cuties....you can lose files on them....they are very strange...one day there on the stick...next day..."WHERE ARE THEY???".

I prefer to use DVD's as data disks and I only ever use SONY, after all, they developed the technology.

I also back up to an external hard drive, three times a week, three different backup files, in case one fails I can go back to the previous one or the one before that, and i would still only lose a week's worth of work.

Sometimes multiple types of "backups" are helpful.
I use CD, memory stick and I also have an external hard drive backup system that backs up everything on a regular basis...It may be overkill, but who wants to risk loosing all those hard to find designs.....and those $$ designs.

So far I only have back up cd's, my sister also has a set and then to keeps then all in a file on her computer for me too. Isn't she sweet? Getting an external hard drive is on my to do list when I get a round to it. BTW..I'm using Memorex....cd's that hubby picked up for me.

I honestly could not really tell, it is all up to preferences when it comes to media storage. I personally store my files on a USB drive and also have a back up on an external hard drive.

i use a USB memory pen for lots of my work but also have an external drive that will hold all the designs and photos and can also be transfered from computer to computer. i used to use discs but as they can get scratched over time and if its a bit tempermental then you can loose the lot.
external drives may sound the most expencive way but you can put so much on it, the memory pens can be purchased from E bay so cheaply and hold your designs and are handy for takeing to your friends. or a potential client to show what you can do. a file with your photos in it is a great way to show off what you have done..
the external drive can also be taken and used in this way but with the benifit that a design program can be actually loaded onto the drive so it opens up to let you show the actual design for selection
Hope this will give you something to think about

I use a 4 GIG stick. You can save all your photos, designs, embroideries on these sticks. You can create files and sub folders. It works just like a CD or hard drive. You cand add, delete and change the embroidery files. They hold more than a CD and cost anywhere from $10-30 depending on the size. They hold thousands of embroideries. I started out with a 512 GIG and moved everything to a 1 GIG and then moved to a 4 GIG so I wouldn't have to throw everything on another stick for a long time.

I have all of my designs ( probably 6000 of them ) on a sandisk 8G jump drive, and still have space for at least that many more. I have two machines and they are in two different places and with this little thing that fits in my pocket I can have all of my designs with me wherever i go. you cann add and remove designs and any other files that you need with just a couple of mouse clicks, no waiting for cd writing.

My embroidery and photos are the only reason I purchase rewritable cd's. They cost more that the other ones, but with updating the designs and photo's all the time, it is cheaper. Most everything else I put on cd's that are not rewriteable. As I said, the non rewriteable are less expensive and if need be can be thrown away when you update the others, but I prefer to use the others on just those two items. Maxell is as good as any, and if is what I use most of the time, unless I can get the others on sell. What ever is on sell is what I get unless it's an off brand. I buy LG alot also, they are pretty good.

I am glad you ask this question, I was thinking about the same thing.

The brand you mentioned is fine, as are TDK, Optimum, Fujifilm, Sony. Personally, I would stay away from the large stacks you can buy really cheap, sometimes those are not labeled or are an 'off' brand. Be sure to store you CDs in a protective shell case, so they don't get scratched and you should be fine.

I have done alot of CD saving in the past, with graphics and data in the business world and have not had any bad experiences. Sometimes, I will burn 2 of the same CD and use one and store the other as aback-up that is backed up.
